There's loads of lappys for around £300, if they've got XP/vista just wipe it and use linux if that's what u want, or dual boot it?
Or was it more about making a point about linux vs MS?
Anyways, I've gone for the Acer dual core 2.2ghz from Tesco, £330 after a £9 voucher and quidco, plus 1050 club card points.
Hi,
I'm wanting to buy this laptop as well, can you tell me where you got all the discounts/vouchers. I have topcashback at 3% and have found a voucher on hotukdeals for double clubcard points.

My parents are buying my son a laptop for Christmas as we got rid of his very old desktop. He does some work online on various websites, a lot of web browsing and is really keen to start playing Sims2 as a friend has it and he would also like to be able to play his Flight Simulator game as even my 12 month old Dell desktop won't play it, neither would his old desktop or obviously my Macbook.
He needs something with at least 2gb RAM, something that will be fast for web browsing so he can complete his online work quickly and something capable of play Sims2, Flight Simulator, Nancy Drew pc games etc. He isn't interested in shot em up or war games etc.
Budget is pretty much anything up to £600 ish but obviously the less spent the better.
Any suggestions welcome as the games thing is driving me mad, I never expected his 2 year old games not to work on my 1 year old expensive Dell desktop!0 -

Games depend on the graphics card that is fitted to a computer. The more powerful graphics card the more expensive the computer. If you need a computer to play modern games you will pay a lot more for a laptop than you would for a desktop computer. You might find it is cheaper to upgrade your Dell Desktop and get a laptop for homework and the Internet!0 -
Thinking of buying this for my son Advent 5401 for £400 from Currys,
http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1401057122.1226168712@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfdadefjdfjlgecflgceggdhhmdgml.0&category_oid=-34014&sku=676404&page=Product&fm=1&sm=0&tm=0
Is it any good? Any alternatives would be great.
What about a refurb from Currys? seen a similar spec for about £300.
My son wants the 2mp web cam would be surfing the net, playing some games nothing special(he has a xbox360)doing photos, doing videos from his mobile.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a used laptop, the battery might be useless!0

Have a look at the discount codes & vouchers board on here, there's a Tesco thread.
I ended up with £9 quidco (3%); £9 voucher; double clubcard & tesco credit card points = 1020 pts. Effectively just under £3210 -
I would appreciate some comments on this laptop http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/497835/HP-G60-120EM
this seems ok
I am looking for a laptop capable of running Sims 2 and have a budget of about £600. Any ideas what I can buy. I have read that I should stay away from 8400 and 8600 graphics cards (?) as they have problems.
I have also looked at this http://www.staples.co.uk/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?Description=UK_CL_Laptops+-+Toshiba&CatIds=21797,35750,90634&webid=396276&affixedcode=WW
but I am not sure the AMD processor plus its black and shiny = damn annoying to keep clean!0 -
