The Great 'Cheapest Decent Laptop' Hunt

I bought a laptop from the laptop superstore and have had nothing but problems ever since. I wasn't cheap at almost 400 quid (second hand) and I had to chase them up for basic stuff like the drivers cd! after threatening them with trading standards and a useless laptop for weeks, I eventually got the cd. Since then, I have had to get the darn thing repaired twice - the hard drive is knackered - I have to stop here because I can feel the old stress levels going up just thinking about them!!!! Don't buy off these people - they are useless and rogues!0

I ended up buying the Fujitsu laptop as it seems to have marginally better specs and Dell haven't even bothered to answer the questions I've emailed them!
It is now 449 pounds even in the Comet stores, so I could go and pick it up myself, rather than having to wait for delivery.
Have also managed to set up wi-fi broadband so I'm very proud of myself!!!“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us...."0 -
You made me go and check the prices, lol, and its now £10 cheaper at £439.99 buying online. However, if you can buy it instore I would go for that at £449.99 as the Comet delivery team leave a great deal to be desired
Only been using it a couple of days so still trying to work out what I am doing with it but so far so good. I do miss my mouse and find posting on here still quite fiddly with the touch pad0 -

I find touch pads really hard to use. Just get a USB mouse - makes life so much easier. In fact if I'm doing a lot of writing I plug in a USB keyboard as well.0 -
Try one of these:
https://www.alphasmart.co.uk
Available cheaply from:
http://www.portabletechnology.co.uk/erol.html#262x0&&http%3A%252F%252Fwww.google.co.uk%252Fsearch%3Fie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26q%3Dalphasmart+neo
If the link doesn't work try teh short version and click around a bit:
http://www.portabletechnology.co.uk
It uses the palm operating system rather than windows, which brings some disadvantages, but the benefits are over 24 hour battery life per charge, instant boot up (yes instant) full size keyboard - much easier typing, touch sensitive screen and it is very light. I've just ordered one on 30 day approval so I'll let you know what I think of it but it looks very impressive at £245 plus VAT brand new.

I've got the cash but I'm still dithering over which laptop to buy
. I had a look at the Comet laptops on display and was very impressed with the X-black type wide screens.
Thanks to good advice from JPS, Grahawk and Vanoonoo.......I'm a little better informed.
I'd like to buy a Sony but they seem to be very expensive:rolleyes: . I get the impression that Dell aren't brilliant........especially customer support. I've heard good reports about Acer/Fujitsu/Siemens and HP.
I need another helping hand or a kick up the backside.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -
I think your right about Sony being overpriced. Widescreens may seem good but if you do the maths you get less on screen than normal screens - someone, somewhere did the maths and found this is the case.0
