The Great 'Cheapest Decent Laptop' Hunt
Comments

The X3100 is a lot better than the older Intel cards -- the GMA 9xx series; however, if you really want 'decent' graphics it HAS to be a card by either ATi or nVidia.
Your post is a bit hard to understand, do you want a 15" or a 17"?
The Dell is the best laptop out of the bunch,. For one simple reason you should pick it over the Toshiba, an Intel Santa Rosa > Turion. In fact, it's usually true that a Core 2 Duo > Turion X2. This will hold true if the clock speeds are within 20%.
As for the Under £600 gaming laptop. Can anyone buy a Vostro from Dell? Isn't it for businesses only? If you can't buy one look at this:

£549.99 (without an OS, so ok if you already have windows... £609 with Vista)
15.4" Screen
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2x2Ghz
nVidia 8600M GS
2 GB RAM
160GB Hard DriveQualified member of the Chartered Institute of Insurers.
I used to work for a software house dealing with insurance quotations, so I know quite a lot about a few insurers!0 -
Thanks for the reply everyone.
NineThreeNine, anyone I think can buy a Vostro but don't forget (like I have!) that the price you see does not include VAT.
I would quite like a 15.4 widescreen with the WXGA+ (those letters might be wrong?) so i can get a slightly higher resolution but still stay with a 15" screen.

Maybe you guys could help me out... I'm considering getting a replacement laptop for my falling apart Acer, with priority being a long battery life. I'm not sure in which direction to go.0

You should see the case of my laptop right now - the screws are falling out of it!
Anyhow I completely forgot about Dell, thanks for the reminder.0 -

I hate widescreens for computers .. they are taking over the market ... old square screens are becoming as obsolete as dial up.
That was just a little rant.0 -

I totally agreen Ben. I've want something much more portable and lightweight but am struggling to find a 14" square screen or smaller laptop for around the £300 mark. I think I might end up with the new EEE PC 9000 -
I got one of the Latitude D830s recently, a bit more than I expected or wanted to pay, but it seems worth it so far.

Completely busted this open (if you'll excuse the cheesy language!). A dell vostro 1500 for £514 (ex vat and delivery) with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40 ghz (!!!)
Vista Home Prem.
15.4" Wide Screen WXGA DISPLAY with TrueLife
3072MB DDR2 SDRAM (!!!)
320GB SATA HDD (!!!)
256MB nVidia GeForce 8600M GT (!!!)
DVD RW drive
All in all, if you can claim VAT back through your business, head to dell uk's small business section now, choose the vostro 1500 and customize it with these specs or your own choice.
Even with VAT this works out just under £600, so brill
been on the dell site done all the customizing stuff 634 quid plus vat i must be doing something wrong ...........arggggggggggggg she now wants a dell women eh lol0
