  • Just bought a PATRIOT 2006 VIA 1.2 with cd writer from Currys at £449.

Use code AFF10PC to get 10% off. I also used my egg card to get a further 5% cashback (you have to click through the link on the egg.com site.)

Total I paid inc egg cashback was £392.33 inc postage.

What is the Patriot laptop likes with performance? Its tempting to get it just to be used to surf the web and do regular word processing and emailing.

    Any suggestions guys?

  • Sleep-loser/grahawk,

Thanks for your help so far. I am finally going shopping for THE Laptop. From info. given I think this is the spec. I should look for.

    Processor - Centrino/Celeron
    256MB RAM/40GB - although 256/30maybe o.k.
    DVD/CD Rewriter
15.4" black screen- probably can only get 15.1" inmy price range.

Have I got this right? Is there anything else I should be aware of?

    Once again thanks.

    Anne
  • Just to clarify the Celeron should be a Celeron-M and not a Celeron-D which are also found in laptops. There should be a sticker on the laptop with Celeron-M written on it. Make sure you avoid older Celerons which some places are still try to flog (the sticker will just say Celeron).

At your budget you should be able to get a 40gb drive and if you can get 512mb RAM then that's a good option. If it has 256mb RAM while that should be OK but I would still budget to get another 256mb of RAM (about £30 from the highly respected http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.asp ).

You may even manage to get a DVD writer.

As long as it's not going to be used for recent and new games and highly complex graphics work there's not too much to worry about.
  • Thanks. Merry Christmas

  • Hi guys,

This is my first post, but i've been browsing the forums for a while now...

Just wanted to seek out your advice. I've got about £500 to spend on a laptop, and I want to know what good deals are out there, and what can I get for my money...

    Look forward to your reponses...

  • I've done my research and these are my choices, any help in deciding which would be best would help.

I really appreciate all the help I have received so far.

    Choices - E - Buyer -IBM Ts Thinkpad R50e Pentium M Processor,Centrino, Bluetooth, Firewire. £ 571.11

    E- Buyer - Samsung P28 Centrino Celeron M Processor, DVD/CDRW, 15.1", £564

    Curry's - Packard Bell E4710, Pentium M Processor, DVD RW & CD RW, 15", Wireless Enabled £649

    Comet - Acer TM4001LC1, Pentium M, No DVD Recorder,15",Wireless Enabled £600

Thinkpad is only one with Bluetooth , I'm still trying to get further spec.

All specs seem similar to me. Am I better to go for Samsung with CeleronM & Centrino or Pentium M with built in wireless facility?

If it's in your budget I would always go for a Centrino/Pentium-M.

The best deals I've seen are the Acer Travelmate 2303LC at Comet and an Acer Aspire with an AMD Sempron 2800+ at Staples store. Both cost £499.
