One of my hairdresser mates told me a couple of years ago to always use clear or see-through shampoo rather than creamy ones as they clean your hair better, then to use a coconut conditioner to leave your hair shiny and healthy looking. She also told me it doesn't matter which brand you use, so I started using Tesco own brand apple & aloe vera shampoo (about 62p, green coloured but still see-through) and Tesco own brand coconut conditoner (about 97p). It's very cheap but very effective - I don't think my hair has ever been in better condition!
Also, having hairdresser mates means I'm lucky enough to never have to pay for a haircut!!0 -

Suggestion - get a good book from the library first, I got 'haircutting for dummies'. This has a useful section on how to cut your own hair as well as teaching you to cut everyone elses hair. (BTW I also cut my 2 sons and my Husbands hair!) Get a good set of clippers and stick to simple crew cuts for boys. Luckily the boys are of an age where they will tolerate having mum cut their hair.
I dread to think how much I must have saved over the years - estimate £7 for each of the boys, £10 for my Husband and £20 for a wet cut for me, every 2 months, comes to £44 for 2 months, over the course of 8 years this comes to a grand total of £2112 :eek::eek::eek:
Glad i'm not the only one, i actually decided to cut my own hair because of the multitude of botches the hairdressers made of my hair, so i bought some scissors, watched a few youtube vids and there are quite a few believe me, then away i went and now i have got it exactly how i want it and no more salon dread for me......the only decent hairdresser i had was way too expensive on my part time wage, so i've had to learn

Ok, since reading this thread I've tried a couple of things! I have a lot of hair, quite long, and then ends were heavily bleached, but not a curl in sight - it's too heavy to hold them
The ends were breaking badly, not split ends, just bits of broken hair whenever I brushed it. SO!
I already had some coconut oil, tried it on the ends and the effect was amazing, within a couple of days far less hair was breaking off than before. The consistency is also far easier to manage than other oils because it's solid at room temperature but melts on your fingers, definitely a winner! I've tried professional hair oils before, but this is the best I've found. Bought it at Boots, found it with other cheap natural stuff for facial moisturising (which it is also fab for btw).
I was also intrigued by the conditioner only wash so I gave that a go and I was amazed. I always assumed it was the shampoo that dealt with the greasy roots, but just conditioner alone made my whole head of hair shiny and clean and manageable without any grease in sight! Not sure about doing it long term due to possible build up of either conditioner itself or daily dirt, but have cut down my shampooing to once a week tops, so saving money on products and stripping my hair's natural defenses less!0 -
I buy blocks of Creamed Coconut for curries, @ 60p each, & use the 'lardy end' for moisturising, etc., If there's ever too much to use, the birds will eat it in cold weather.....0

23rd spiral - i'm with you on this one!
I too have what i would call "greasy" hair, and if i don't wash it daily, it looks like its not been washed for days & days & is limp and generally not nice!
I'd love to find a way out of this daily grind!
for a quick fix to greasy roots, sprinkle talcum powder(any kind) into hair then brush out thoroughly.this absorbs the grease and makes it smell fresh too.:D0 -
I work at my local college in the hairdressing and beauty training department. The lecturers here have had years of experience working in a salon themselves and years of teaching experience. No service is done without a professional there to guide the student through it, ok sometimes it does take a bit longer than in a normal salon but when you can have a cut and blowdry for £4.00 and full head foils for £16.00 (£17.50 inc cut) who can really complain??? How do you think your hairdresser got to where they are now??
And you can also get an full body aromatherapy massage for £8.00!!!0 -
I have blonde highlighted hair, and straighten it everyday so it is very dry and loads of split ends! I use Herbal Essences for coloured hair, last weekend I bought the intensive mask (buy 2 get 3rd free in Boots!), put that on my hair and wrapped it in clingfilm all day and it has been soooo soft ever since. Deffinately going to give it another go this weekend! x0

Hi, I have gone a week doing the CO method. I was amazed too. I have greasy roots with really dry, frizzy, processed lengths. I like washing my hair everyday because I like that just washed feeling in a morning. I thought it would eventually start to get greasy but it hasn't. It feels just like I've used shampoo, but probably softer which is keeping me off the straighteners. I am using up expensive conditioners at the moment, but then I'm going to get the cheapest I can get my hands on as its supposed to be better for cleansing as it doesn't leave any residue of silicone.
Coconut oil is great as its not as greasy as OOil so washes out easily. Haven't used coconut oil since doing CO method as I imagine it will need some shampoo to get it out. May do it once a week. I have notice since using coconut oil that my hair has changed texture, it feels squeeky strong and I'm not shedding as much hair (usually I notice it on my dark tops and have to brush it off).0 -
Does anyone know where I can buy coconut oil? Near me I have a Boots, Holland and Barratt, Tesco, Sainsburys, but can't see online if they stock it?
Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.0
