Got a lovely stool yesterday for £5 in a CS - it's a Victorian/edwardian piano stool wityh turned legs, cut down, just the right height for me and with the original horsehair padding. Came up beautifully with some shoe polish (an antique dealer's tip for dealing with scratches!)0

I picked up some interesting LPs in the shop I volunteer in yesterday though I'm not sure who did the pricing as they were all over the place, but it all pretty much evened out. There was also a big pile of old 60s 7" singles in really poor condition, but I couldn't resist picking up one by Rolf Harris - it's him introducing the Stylophone. Fantastic and only 50p
We'd received a donation of standard charity shop vinyl (James Last and the like) but in a really nice vintage vinyl case. I'd have bought that as well but I have nowhere to put it. The store manager isn't particularly on the ball over these things, the assistant who I work with on Sundays said she reckoned she'd have just chucked it out . Fortunately she's off this week so it should be saved!0 -

ive been following this thread for ages now.
its great to see bargains people get.
but what is really interesting is what tat people call bargains lol some raggy old clobber form the 80s lol the mind boggles.
also charity chops they do over charge lol in the early 80s they didnt employ expensive managers to do a job someone would wilingly do for free. utter madness. charity shops should price their stuff to sell get off the shelves asap.0 -
I brought a Next dress for £20 in my charity shop. It was a bit steep but it still had its original price tag of £50! It is a gorgeous dress and I wouldn't have found it in the Next sale at £20.Competition Wins:

I disagree that many people would want to manage a charity shop full-time for no remuneration. It's actually a pretty responsible job and you have to do cashing up, banking etc. I would not be happy to do that as a volunteer, certainly not 5 days a week or more.
I have no problem with charities employing managers, and from my time volunteering, I'm aware that shops struggle to get good, reliable volunteers. A lot of volunteers don't feel any need to tell the shop they won't be coming in for their shift - to me this is basic manners, but not all feel that way. If there wasn't a paid manager, the shop may not be in a position to open. And some volunteers only want to do one task (eg the till, pricing the books) which isn't offering best value to the charity.
I also don't think prices are unreasonable - charity shops still have overheads and are there primarily to raise money for charity - the more the better. Like it or not, they are businesses and run as such. I can't believe actually how tight fisted some customers are - my shop had some brand new cushions in for £5.99 each but a woman suggested she could get them cheaper in Next! Maybe during the sale...but even then, I don't think so.0 -
