A lot of people have said that Vista is quite a poor OS, but what is really so poor about it? The only part of the system that I don't like is the defrag.
For starters the abysmal performance doing simple things like copying a USB thumb drive to HDD and virtually anything done across a network.

Far higher resource usage than XP for doing the same things.

Crappy visual effects which you have to turn off anyway on low end hardware.

Next up is squirreling old style ini and other config type files away in obscure locations and not showing where they are in a search. This hacked me off enough for me to avoid putting programs in the program files folder (which then stops this behaviour)

There were numerous other things I found irritating. Irritating enough for me to preorder Win 7 which really goes against the grain as I'm rewarding MS for producing what I consider to be a duff O/S.

Start up takes ages compared to XP, it uses an excessive amount of RAM (Windows 7 uses less), the fancy graphics just use up processor power and are best turned off, too many do you want to proceed messages.

Vista was an improvement on XP in some areas but definitely not in others. Windows 7 pretty much beats XP outright in all areas.

Thanks for the links. The upgrade advisor tells me that Nero and Power DVD will not work but that is not much of a problem.

It looks like there will be/are updated versions of both programs for Windows 7:

It tells me my Epsom r200 printer is compatable but I know it doesn't work properly with XP!!
I've had a quick google and XP drivers for the printer exist - and it seems like Vista drivers are built in for the printer.. so Windows 7 ones should be as well.

    And this?

Personally I'd wait till 22nd Oct to see if retailers are falling over themselves to undercut.

I'm sure come week after 22nd October there'll be a flood of them on ebay, some people with Vista machines taking the free upgrade pack but not wanting to use it for whatever reason and selling on.... or if you can put up with Vista upgrading to Win7 and selling their full retail version of Vista on....or even XP.....
