I received a telephone call this afternoon from a very nice lady at NatWest. On this occasion, they have refunded me the charges and re-imbursed me for all of the telephone calls I had to make. Result! :j
They are aware of the issue and are trying to sort it with PayPal, but until it has been sorted, all customers with the new Visa Debit cards will be charged £1.25 for each transaction. To avoid this charge, I was advised to set up a direct debit to PayPal, rather than pay with my card.
Thanks to everyone for your input,
Peter.0 -
Thank god someone is in the same boat as me! I really hope people still care about this problem as I have had a charge myself.

I have e-mailed them asking them for an explanation as to why they have charged me £5.99 to transfer funds! I don't even see why they have charged me at all! Plus, I often get £1.60 charges off paypal and it is starting to play on my mind a bit.0 -
Well done OP I tend to use a Visa debit card for paypal linked via Barclays account don't think I have been cgareged but will keep this thread in mind.
If you get any more info it would be nice to hear what is causing these charges.0 -
Holly, to me it appears that there wasn't enough in your PP acount to pay for the item, so £5.99 was transferred from your bank account. I could be wrong, but I can't see any fees.My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -

I'm with you two, this looks like just a normal transfer to cover a purchase, Holly can you check back in your paypal and see whether this is just a funding payment?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Ah ha...yes that makes sense. I don't keep funds in my account you see I just transfer each time. Would you advise me to keep money in my Paypal account instead of funding it each time?
Thanks for your help guys!0 -

I have also just discovered a large number of transactions that have a £1.25 charge next to them. My account is a new RBS business account with a visa debit card. My paypal account has for the last 5 years been attached to a maestro account with no problems, but as soon as I changed to visa debit I've been charged £1.25 for every transaction including the validation amount!!! Out of interest I searched paypal help and found a quote about account confirmation amounts, "PayPal will charge a small amount to your card. For Maestro or Solo cards this will be two small random amounts, each less than £1. For all other card types, there will be a charge of £1 exactly.Note: If we are unable to determine or we do not support the currency of your card, the card will be charged US $1.95." At their exchange rate this $1.96 is exactly £1.25. They charged me £2.25!!! I'm calling both paypal & the bank in the morning.Don't criticise till you've walked a mile in their shoes..0
