When we moved here, all the carpets had moths, so we had no choice but to get rid, because every time we switched on the lights, we suddenly became infested with moths in their millions
So we do have decent (plain) carpets.....but only because of the bugs!!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
And the talk of twin tubs, stopped me being nostalgic....
My twin tub and tongs were the bain of my life as a student, in shared digs above a hairdressing salon, where all the customers had full access, and I got a few extra pennies for washing the towels!
I could never figure out the temperature on those things. Come on now, whose still got a twin tub????I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.0 -
I had a brown and orangey striped nylony looped type material (not sure what it was called) - that pulled like b*ggery - with saddle style arms - inherited from dad in 1970's - moved in this house in 1980's and had a strip of bright pink wall and tiny bit of brick effect wallpaper somewhere in EVERY room - had the brick effect paper on chimney breast and it was CROOKED - I used to sit on my pulled stripey sofa with my head at an angle looking at the crooked wallpaper, also had a very flambouyant swirly type carpet in turquoise and yellow - feeling slightly sea sick  - got rid of the paper from chimney breast as soon as we could but suite and carpet remained for years.
MIL went to Skippy BS to plead that she had been a customer all her married life and 'please' could her son have a mortgage - that was the late 1970's. In the end after saving with them for 2 years they would only grant us a mortgage for 15 years because it was an old terrace house which cost a massive £8,250 and we managed to knock them down to £7,950 - and it seemed like (was) a fortune - laughable now  (houses in that street currently go for circa high £90k:eek::eek:)
I do appreciate how hard it is now as my dd has struggled to get her own property - so laughing at the past situation not necessarily saying starting out is any easier now than it was then IYKWIM- OMG I sound a real old fogie

Our first flat cost £11875 in 1980 and we sold it 2 years later for £13300 - thought we were millionaires!!!0

looks lovely and peaceful too Hypno...
I bought first flat complete with suite - it was a leather g-plan one so ok apart from tan colour and a bit worn. Was one of those modular jobs...sometimes four seats and sometimes two sofas...lasted us a good few years before the money was scraped together for new one. Most of the people I work with seem to buy all new now plus mega tv when they buy first home.Mortgage OP 2025 £6250/7000Mortgage OP 2024 £7700/7000

Lovely - I am so jealous of the houses that you have available in your area for the price! I bet you can't wait until you can start looking at them for real.
I bought my flat in Dec 05. I was lucky enough to live at home for free for two years beforehand and had saved the equivalent of mortgage and bills for that time.
I put down a 25% deposit made up of my own savings; some money my mum had saved for me over the years and a loan from my aunt . I was able to negotiate the furniture, fridge and wash mach as part of the deal. The only bit of furniture I bought was a bed. I replaced the sofas at Christmas as the ones that had been left behind had such bad upholstery hat it ripped even further every time we sat down! My friend donated a TV; my aunt and uncle provided me with loads - a video and a DVD player and a few other small electrical items.
I only wish I'd known about this site back then - there are a few things that I would have done differently. The good thing is that by having a decent sized spare room I have been able to have lodgers and also know that if needed, OH and I can stay here for a few years.

Morning (or is that middle of the night?) all!
DD is off to China, so I am up to make sure she gets up and to make sure OH is awake enough to take her......just call me the human alarm clock with built in repeat alarm
urg, yes, I am very much looking forward to property hunting for real. In my number crunching the other day, I did work out the required amount of monthly payment I would have to make for the size of mortgage we would look to get for a dream house.
So, the idea is that from January, I will overpay the mortgage by an amount equivalent to difference between the current mortgage and te expected new one.....that way, the building society can see that we can afford the higher repayments when we come to move.
I will be doing the MFiT challenge anyway, so the overpayments will hopefully be happening as part of that, but I might as well tailor them to a certain extent in order to give me a better chance of acceptance when I need/want it!
Off to scratch and bank......and drink more coffee :rolleyes:Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0
