Your welcome, I have been in hospital for quite a while with heart prob, but am OK now.
The only reason I can think of why someone with a large amount of ambition, self-belief and work ethic would remain in a lower paid job is convenience, which still fits into my argument that everyone finds their own level. In this case, they have reached the right level of income vs convenience.

I'm surprised you can only think of one reason!
Some people have the ambition and self belief to start their own business and fail (for various reasons). Others may have the ambition and self belief to be the best at what they do which could be working in a low paid industry. Others may be in an industry that goes into decline and become out of work (at which point their ambition changes to just supporting their familys). Many immigrants have also had the ambition and self belief to travel great distances to find work, but find it difficult to get jobs commensurate with their qualifications (and the ones I have met all had great work ethics).
There are many reasons why a person may be in a low paid job (and for our infrastructure to survive we need them and they should be valued). My annoyance was at your assumption that all people in low paid jobs fall into your classification.0 -

Sorry to hear that you've been in hospital, it must have been serious if you were there for a whole year. I hope everything is OK now.
I think everyone falls into my classification, in all industries and all sectors. We all eventually find our own level and are happy to stay there, except perhaps the ones who are completely driven and workaholic, though these often die off early anyway and find their level at about 6ft under the earth."I can hear you whisperin', children, so I know you're down there. I can feel myself gettin' awful mad. I'm out of patience, children. I'm coming to find you now." - Harry Powell, Night of the Hunter, 1955.0 -
I'm confused
. I saw the title of the thread and thought I would ask for some advice as to how much more I should be saving (I'm 53) if I want to still retire at 65.
I seem to have made a mistake; this thread isn't about the Conservative's proposals at all.0 -
