So, I've got to push it. How far should I add to my 3.5 miles this evening then?

I'm waiting to be 'approved' on erunning - but if I'm a member, does that mean I can claim to be 'affiliated' to a club for a discount on my race entries?! ha ha! (never quite sussed how that works, do the clubs contribute?)

BJ, I would aim for up to 4 miles. Total, not added! Take it nice and easy and you shouldn't find it too bad.

The way it works is in the process of change.

Until now, a race organiser had to charge a £2 unattached levy to any entrant who wasnt a member of an affiliated club and then send a cheque to UKA after the event for £2 x no. of unattached runners.

That is now changing so that race organisers pay for a license to hold a race and then keep all the unattached levies. In theory they can now charge as little or as much as they like (or indeed nothing at all) but most are sticking to the £2 addition.

You can only avoid the levy once you're a member of an affiliated club AND paid your individual affilliation fee of £5. We have several hoops to jump through first, including proof of coaching capabilities, an ethos in keeping with UK Athletics etc etc. Obviously the website is going to be a big part of that.;)

  • Ah - I was jesting about the cost saving, but the principle of the levy is interesting, I had no idea of that!

Grand job you're doing - I'll be the 'don't be in a diet' guru - ha ha!

Had an interesting chat with a work colleague today, 29 years old diagnosed with gallstones, she said it can't be fat because she's a vegetarian. She's a 5'4@ veggie, weighing in at 13 stone, eats cheese all the time, butter, cappuccino's (2 starbucks a day from our franchise in the building!) loves take away pizza and curry. I went into a long explanation about why I changed my ways, scared of the gallbladder pain. She was truly shocked she was doing herself any harm!

I guess it's what's become the norm, so at 29 because she doesn't eat more than 1 chocolate bar or bag of crisps a day - what's the problem???
She was truly shocked at the exercise I do, and what I eat, and I'm nowhere near as good as some of you guys.

I'd love to know how much fat is in a starbucks cappuccino, with syrup, cream on top and chocolate sprinkles - it must be equivalent to a meal! They sell hundreds of them in our office block.

I would think literally thousands bj, enough sugar in there to keep me going for a week!
  • It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.
  • 471 calories and 18 grams of fat - in a coffee!!!s OMG!!!

4 miles was fine, I've done quite a few 10Ks - just that the winter has thrown me a bit, and haven't had a focus on taking things forward.

and is that without the added shots, cream, syrup etc?

    Hi,

I would like to join please. I signed up for the Race for Life last night. Last time I walked it, this time would like to run. I am very overweight, so it will be a challenge.
I had a look on the Race for Life site last night for their training plan, and there wasn't one. Can anyone recommend one. It really will have to be for a beginner, as at the moment could't even run for a bus.

    Thanks,

    Jess

    Hi Jess,

    What date is the RFL?

OK the first step we always recommend to newcomers is: walking! The saying that you need to walk before you can run is true in a literal sense. Now you may think "I can walk now", but I mean you should be able to walk up to about 4 miles at a fast pace (heavy breathing) before you start running. I would recommend building up to that and then checking back in and we'll sort out a plan to start you running.

There are several reasons why we recommend this. The first is that plenty of fast walking is a great way to strengthen your muscles to get them ready for running. Starting off with running right away can put a strain on untrained muscle and the injury risk is high.

Secondly, fast walking with a raised heart rate and breathing is good cardiovascular training for when you start running.

Another reason is that walking is good for weight loss. In fact, you burn more fat per mile walking than running. Shedding a few pounds before you start running means less stress on your joints when you do start. Of course, you shouldn't up your calorie intake at this point (unless you are on an very low cal diet) for this to work.

Race for Life is 6 June.

I can't get on the e-running site, I've been approved but it tells me I've got an invalid email and/or password :(
