hi everyone.
Did 2miles round a lake yesterday - beautiful!
no walking & did it in 30mins so feeling quite chuffed!:)
7 weeks until the half marathon!
what do you think is best for me to do?
the guy i'm training with keeps going on that we're not going far or fast enough but i dont want to push myself 2 soon.
I would have thought being able to run an extra 2 miles a week would be a good goal?0 -

Hi BB!
It is great to see that you've embarked on a regular running routine, you can only get fitter and feel better as a result.:D
However, I would strongly urge you to forget about any thoughts of taking part in a half marathon in 7 weeks time. You will not be anywhere near fit enough by then to enjoy the experience so why rush to take on such a long distance?
You will get far more satisfaction out of building up more gradually, firstly towards a 10K and then 10 miles, and have far less chance of putting yourself off running thereafter.
A half marathon is a long way and needs some serious long term preparation - to put things in perspective there were 2046 runners in the Norwich Half last year with only 2 runners finishing slower than 3 hours (ie 14 minute miles).
The body is under a lot of stress when taking on 13 miles for the first time - jumping from a solitary 5K several months earlier straight to a half with very little training in between is too big a jump and is asking for injuries.
Please be patient and you'll get far more out of your running.:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hi BB sounds like a nice run
But I saw your other posts when I was reading back on what I missed while I was away...I'm not sure you can train for such a long distance from such a low base in such a short time. Which is absolutely not to say that you cant run a half marathon, but that perhaps you should reconsider about running this half.
For example, 2 miles in 30 minutes is 15 minute miling - at that pace it will take you 3 hours and 17 minutes to run the whole distance - thats a very long time to be on feet and a lot of pain - I'm just worried it could put you off running for a long time - a half when you arent properly prepared is very hard work...
edit: cross post with Rich he said it much better than me:o:o

Welcome Back Rich/becky...
I feel the weight of expectation upon me as one of the only VLMers!
Cant some of you mortgage your houses and get a charity place?
Becky, sorry to hear you are not enjoying the races I can't really offer any advice but it must be hard when you are aware that you were faster previously, (not something I have had to woory about!).....but looking how you are going you must be close to your best. I think it is great that you want to concentrate on the training.....I reckon lots of people hate the training and focus only on the races...at least you still love being out there.
Simply.... well done on signing up for your marathon.....and good luck.....I might be after some tips on consistancy.Sealed Pot Challenge 2013: No 1898

Run 2013 VLM in PB: -4:28.260 -
Hi Mascott - nope not far away at all, in fact 7:19 is my best mile rep EVER (:D), but its the 'wanting it' in races that is lacking because even if I run all out I'll be 2-3 minutes off pb (over a half) and frankly that makes me not 'want to run enough' so I quit - its a very bad habit to get into so I'm not going to race again until I 'know' I am on for a pb (this is where useful parkruns come in
)
VLM wise - you'll be fine - there's a broad range of times on here from us previous runners so no matter what your aim is there should be someone whose run a similar time and can help with specific training and stuff0 -

Welcome back, rich and becky! As you may have seen in earlier posts, I will be joining you for the Blackpool marathon. I've knocked together a basic training plan, but was hoping you could give it a once over? In particular, I'd like your opinion on when I should squeeze in a half marathon during the build up. I'll email you what I've got already, if you don't mind rich? Haven't got beckys email addy...
Alias, sorry to hear you're feeling a bit jaded. Why not join us on our "club" marathon in Blackpool next August?!
BB, as per my earlier posts, I have to agree with becky and rich. Now that I've seen your current mileage, I have to say please consider moving the half marathon attempt. why not start with a 5k or 10k and build up from there. You can definitely get ready for a half marathon, but not for the one you are planning. I fear that the training/race will be a horribly painful experience for you that might put you of running!Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -

Why not enter a 5K though, to give you some motivation?
Runners often lapse when running for it's own sake is the sole motivation!Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
