  • But we werent ranting about slowbies - we were talking about the factors that have to be taken into account when designing a course for a parkrun and it is a fact that lapped runners become a major headache when you have any more than 2 laps.

Yep, the RFL are literally fundraisers, they dont make any pretense of it being an athletics event (although I have no idea why it has the word 'Race' in the title:p) so let them get on with it. Our main problem with them is the emotional sh1te that is spouted to get thousands of people to stump up £13 thinking that they're helping a charity. Not one penny of the £13 goes to charity!

  • I think the £13 goes towards funding the event which is fair enough. There's a great atmosphere at a Race for Life event but unless your really fast then it should be taken as a bit of fun. I'm entering with my mum this year but will be walking.

But even if you are fast theres no timing of the event anyway...not sure how it can in way be called a 'race'. I dont have a problem with the concept of RFL at all - its fine as a fundraising event it works...what annoys me is the then implict association with other running events and charity fundraising which really shouldnt exist as it just dilutes the sport!

Run for life would be a better a title...

    But is it?

These events typically have 3,000 or more participants..so £39,000 per event.

They are run in parks and staffed by volunteers. Every Saturday there are 26 5K events across the country run in the same park environments and staffed by volunteers, cost to participants FREE!

Its easy for them to brush off the fees with 'towards funding of the event' without being questioned but if you really want to know where that money goes take a look at their accounts, you may be a little alarmed.

But lets for one moment assume that it does cost £39,000 to organise a 5K amble around a local park, and that all involved are emotionally involved with the best interests of furthering the cause of research into cancer, then what a shameful waste of money when that money could be doing some proper good at the front line.

Why, if these charities are so close to people's hearts, dont they just send their donations and keep quiet about it? Its not as though you cant go and amble around the park with a few mates anyway...everyone has free access.

And what about the 'raising sponsorship' angle. I've never understood this one. How can someone base whether they make a donation to a charity based on whether someone else completes a 5K? So the charity is worthy of a donation if the 5K is completed and, by extension, isnt worthy if it isnt completed? Whats the link? None whatsoever.

In my opinion if anyone wants to donate to their favourite charity they should do so (but without any conditions) and leave others to do the same.

    Hehe Morning rant over........;)

Cool there hasnt been a serious rant on this thread for a while not that i'm getting involved in it :D. Although it looks like BJ has been taking lessons from rich ;)

Now I have to ask Rich for a bit of advice.

I have done two runs mon 4m(39mins)fast Tues 4m faster(club). Now my legs feel great today so bearing in mind I will be doing 12+ miles Thurs morning and running club Thurs night (which could be anything ) should I do another 4m(with hills) at an easier pace or do the 9m steady that I'm tempted to do?
I am not tapering for next weeks 10k btw I am concentrating on the half in 6 weeks( although I am resigned to the fact that I'll still run it hard because I'm daft like that my competitive streak will over ride the training run thoughts).
I wont be running at the weekend so I have two rest days there but may take friday as an added rest day if body says so on Friday morning.

I dont have the stats for last nights 4m as Garmin didnt upload but it was faster than Mondays as I have never managed before to keep pace with the person I tagged onto last night.

Everyone seems to be making good improvements in their running now.

Edit : Rich is in full flow, go Richy go :rotfl:

KYCU - if you feel good then do the 9 miler - as long as its steady it wont hurt your training one jot :)

Rich - I thinks its the personal angle that makes people donate - I dont have a problem with the idea of sponsorship tbh, I just dont like the thought that one day all races are entered on the condition of raising money for some charity or other...
  • The main point there is that you are clearly handling the work you're doing and recovering sufficiently between sessions.

If I was in your shoes I'd keep pushing it along until the legs tell you to ease back, after all training is all about getting tired and coming back stronger.

However, you have the added element of a session which is unknown, and out of your control, so taking that into account I'd probably just enjoy an easy 4, say, today and let the resources gather themselves ready for tomorrow.:D

  • Thanks for that Becky/Rich

As i'm attending the beginners sessions I have never known one to be above 5m and I'm sensible enough not to go if I dont feel up to it although as its my day off getting plenty carbs back into me and rest during the day shouldnt be a problem. I feel very positive all of a sudden like something has clicked within me .

Just make sure you keep one step ahead of those 'out of competition' testing bods and you should be okay!;):p

That happened to me to KYCU - like suddenly everything clicked and it was easy to train and get better whereas before it was hard work...not sure what happened but I suspect it was the cumulative effect of consistent training :D

    Have fun :)
