I knew I had something I wanted to run by some of you here - I recently got a heart rate monitor and my resting HR is anything between 60-75 which I believe is normal. My BP is normal too although I have had occasions in the past when it's been high and not sure why.
But when I was out at the running club in the snow, on the track - I looked at it and it was recording my pulse as 200bpm. Naturally I didn't like the look of this so I started reading up about maximum heart rates and ideally to keep mine in the aerobic zone the max should be 157. Well I can't keep my HR under 157 and jog - even slowly! I know cos I've tried. I did a steady 5K the other day - in 40 minutes and at times it reached 191. I think the average for that run was 186.
I don't feel bad when I'm running (jogging) and I know I'm carrying extra weight (5'8" tall - 14 stone 10 (down from 15.5)) but I am quite worried about my heart rate shooting up like that.
Any thoughts / suggestions? Is it for me to persevere with? I've not been to the doctors.

To be honest, HRs can be all over the place. Take the guidelines with a pinch of salt, the range of 'normal' readings is huge.

If you're concerned get it checked out but I'm sure there's nothing wrong.

I'm at the other end in the sense that if I reached 150, even at the end of a hard race, you'd probably have to call an ambulance.:p

A big factor in the differences is 'stroke volume', ie the amount of blood that the heart can pump with one beat and it is this that can vary widely.

A few pics from this morning at Middlesbrough:

Not a bad turnout (101 runners) for a wet, cold morning:

Just getting stuck in coming up to the 1km point:

The photographer obviously thought a front view wasnt photogenic enough at the finish :p:

  • Well done parkrunners - some good running again!!! beer tins - looks like your birthday celebrations fuelled your legs very nicely :D

k-bagpuss - I've never taken my resting HR (I can't sit still long enough ;)) but when running it's usually somewhere between 140-180. I haven't keeled over yet and it seems to be coming down over time so I just use it for comparing effort levels when looking back at my data.

Nealy forgot - nice pics again Rich.

  • Nice going, UK....that must feel good, blowing the cobwebs away after a break.

So, was the building that is now part of the university once a hospital? It certainly looks like it had that sort of history...
