    Wed 30/12 5 Miles Tempo/Fartlek 00:44:56 (08:59/Mile) + 2 Miles WU/WD

I'm not too sure what to call today's run so have settled on Tempo/Fartlek  Work and life conspired against me yesterday and I couldn't get out to run, I'm fed up with not achieving my scheduled miles recently so combined yesterday's and today's run into one 9 miler and really enjoyed it.

The idea was to play around with my pace for the middle 5 miles in preparation for Sunday's 10k race. The overall pace for the 9 miles was 09:27/mile so not too shabby :rotfl:

Sorry to hear that so many people have coughs and colds - I hope you all recover quickly.

Chick - a belated well done on your recent 10k and magnificent new WAVA :T

Rich - as Chick says you are in a different league to the rest of us - good stuff :D

Becky - hope your mum is ok - have a safe journey.

    Hi Guys
I was guided here from another thread, I was told you are a helpful bunch:j
I would like to set up a walking (initially, then develop into running) regime so that I can get fitter and lose weight (I know, you have heard it all before) I realise I need to dedicate 5 sessions a week (I presume less to begin) but I feel walking/running is going to be more flexible to fit in around my hectic life. Do any of you know where I can go to help me create this, do you have any ideas? I am unfit and need to lose quite a few stones so a marathon in my first month would be out of the question but I would love to complete one one day!

Hello Annie :D Welcome to the runclub :)

Start with walking at a brisk pace for 3 times a week for 4 miles (you can map using mapmyrun.com) and see where that gets you is a good start as any :D

Nice running Simply :) Tempo/Fartlek - hahaha just to muddy the waters some more :p

Mum is okay - going in tomorrow for more surgery most likely but shouldn't lose any fingers ;)

Am most upset about this though:
London Marathon to support parkrun events around the UKThe London Marathon and parkrun are delighted that The London Marathon are to support parkrun events around the country in the coming year.

"We're delighted to partner with The London Marathon, a world-renowned event, to bring more parkruns to runners around the UK", said parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt, "parkrun's growth is testament to the fantastic volunteers who organise events in local communities around the country. We're excited about working with the experienced management team of The London Marathon on parkrun's next stage of development."

Arghhhhhh noooo my favourite running event being taken over by the goody bag and medal brigade!!!! Booo :(

    Welcome Annie,

As already said, it is far better to start by establishing a pattern of regular walking rather than trying to go straight from sedentary to running.

Think in terms of 10 weeks of nothing but walking. You will find that weight drops off quicker walking 5 miles per session than running 5 miles per session (although obviously it takes longer) but the main reason for walking first is to strengthen all the connective tissues around the muscles and joints before putting excess stress on them.

This is a case where patience is definitely a virtue.

(And no matter what you read on various advice forums, if you value your lower legs please dont get involved with any run/walk/run/walk type ideas)

Simply - 'Playing around with the pace a bit' sounds like fartlek to me!;)
Another good session whatever it was.:D

I don't understand why you would be upset by this. Surely any sort of funding or support that will allow Parkrun to expand and set up new runs in parts of the coumtry where they don't presently exist is a good thing?

"Our support of parkrun next year, along with the sponsors, will enable parkrun to set up a further 20 events in 2010, bringing free running to more communities - which can only be good for increasing participation in the sport and provides London Marathon runners with a regular weekly event."

Parkrun is already sponsored by Nike, Lucozade Sport, and Sweatshop, who are already widely-known so having the London Marathon on board is only adding to the team. And of course it isn't just for London Marathon runners!

I have just had a look at the New Year's Honours list and maybe next year someone will propose Paul Sinton-Hewitt for an OBE for services to grass-roots sport?
