  • I like the race report from our parkrun at Slough last Saturday....I hadnt realised there was a train on the course, but certainly one that will stand out for being a bit different.:D:D

    Waiting For The Train

How many races can claim they have problems with trains on the course? * Well that’s what happened at Black Park this weekend. We knew when we started this event that there may be occasions when filming might get in the way, one of the perils of being so close to Pinewood Studios, and this was one of those occasions as a train and carriages had been installed on our regular route for the filming of Poirot. Fortunately we have an alternative route comprising 3 laps round a small part of the park for just this situation, and it seemed to work fairly well this morning.

The weather of course was another matter. Torrential rain and high winds overnight left large amounts of debris and standing water around the course, and also appeared to discourage a lot of runners from attending. The race itself however was run during a lull in the storms, with no rain, light winds and even some sunshine – pretty good really, except for the number of puddles of course. It was interesting watching the various techniques adopted by the runners when faced with standing water, ranging from those who tiptoe round or attempt to hurdle, though to those who just plough straight through (seemingly the fastest method). Most people finished with a smile on their faces however, so it can’t have been that bad.

We expect to be back on the usual course next week – let’s hope the weather is a little more cooperative.

    * At the Des Moines Marathon in Iowa this year the leader turned into the finish straight with 400m to go only to find the route blocked by a train. It was a long train and took several minutes to pass through, by which time several other athletes had caught the leader, and so there was an almighty sprint finish to the line as soon as the crossing was clear. Fortunately the original leader still had enough left to win the sprint.

    Race Summary

In his 4th appearance, Peter Stainer of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers maintained his 100% record with his 4th win in a time of 17:27. Chris Bradfield representing Datchet Dashers took second in a time of 18:10, whilst Steve Darby was third in 19:14.

In the ladies race, Louise McKee of Eton Tri won on her Black park debut in a time of 21:47. Kate Burgess of Maidenhead AC set a new PB of 22:12 to finish second, whilst Fiona Louise Carney of Hillingdon Triathletes placed third in a time of 25:01.

In the Age Graded competition, Peter Stainer recorded the best male performance of 82.52%, whilst Louise McKee had the best ladies score of 74.06%.

This week there were 8 first timers. 6 runners recorded PBs, bringing the total number since the Black Park started to 455. In this time, 499 runners from 50 different clubs have completed the race 1480 times covering a distance of 7400 kilometres.

In the points competition Richard Bacon has a lead of 117 points over second placed Olov Hansen. Billy Bhamra leads Barbro Julin by 226 in the ladies competition.

The male course record is held by Richard Ward who ran 16:33 on 29/08/09, event #7. The female equivalent is held by Tamsin Neale who ran 19:32 on 25/07/09, event #2

    Crispy’s Challenge

24 of the 101 challengers have now beaten their PBs since starting the Crispy Challenge ( www.parkrun.com/results/challenge.aspx ). Apart from our two jokers at the start of the challenge, nobody has yet cracked their target; I thought Chris Cowell, had smashed his target to smithereens at the weekend, but alas, after correction it wasn’t to be. There are two runners both within 5 seconds of their targets (Caroline Forbes and Kevan Wilkinson) – one more push and they should break through. There are still four of you who’ve not been out since the start of the challenge – what are you waiting for? – it’s bracing.

4 out of 101 not yet run - whoops, 2 are from this thread not mentioning any names, BT and Poorbabe!:p
    You know you want to.........;)

Oops! Well I was in the states or travelling to/from the states for 4 Saturdays and ill last Saturday. Still :o:o:o:o:o:o:o:o
I'll be out there this Saturday, providing the electrician has finished his work tomorrow and doesn't have to come in on Saturday.

Managed to get myself to go for a run as it was really nice evening, mild and not very windy. Legs felt bit heavy to start with, but much stronger and I started at a good pace. Usually I speed up a bit after half way, but today I just carried on at the same pace. I felt I ran stronger, but wasn't sure if my time was going to improve or not. Still had enough legs to up the pace a bit for the last half a mile and do my usual short sprint to the finish.

I have to say, I was quite surprised when I checked my watch and noticed I'd shaved another 2minutes off my time! Finally felt I was running. I'm well aware though that I can't keep improving my time on every outing. So I wondered, should I just do a really steady, easy run next time, but maybe increase the distance?

I haven't really yet gone out and having in my mind to improve my time,it's just been natural progress, but I know I'll be slightly disappointed the first time I go for a run and don't improve my time, if you see what I mean.

    Anyway,below is this weeks times.

Good job the race route isn't through Rickerby park and along the main road instead Rich ;) All that joking about a canoe for Lancaster, well er you'd need one to get through Rickerby park right now.

Keswick is a wreck at the moment

Cockermouth is under 3 foot of water in its Main St, lots of lovely pics around.

Carlisle is hoping the £38 mill flood defences hold, i would imagine it will do.

Honister and Seathwaite both had 7 inches of rain in the last 24 hours with 2-4 inches more due to fall in the region.

Remeber i said the Derwentwater 10 was flooded in places a few weeks back, well the road is shut today as its unpassabale

It certainly is blustery out there. That strength of wind as a headwind would probably add a good 7-10 minutes to a 10 mile time, in fact it was standstill strength at times.

Luckily, though, for Saturday it is predicted to be a cross wind...so the results could be a bit of a lottery.

It looks like theres a few puddles up there, KMS!:p

Tirlittan - More nice progress there. You're right in that one run per week should be being used to increase distance, which in turn will add more strength for your shorter runs.:D

Dentist's meeting went well last night, lots of curry was demolished by very hungry young dentists.
Back to run club tomorrow night :T

It's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.

You're not wrong about it being blustery Rich - it stopped me in my tracks too. :D

I wasn't able to run this morning as I had an early meeting so I took the opportunity to run home from work tonight. I've not run this route since the summer and was pleased to find that despite two bridges and a steep hill it was a comfortable run; I used to find it quite challenging.

The only problem I had was that my calves felt sore - it's not something I've experienced before and I haven't done anything differently so I'm not sure what might have caused it. Any ideas anyone???

Linda - I hope your dentists aren't going to breathe over their patients tomorrow - curry breath yeuk :rotfl::rotfl:
