I wouldnt call it annoying - I'd still be running 5.25 miles once a week if it wasnt for you...if your OH cant tell you like it is then whats the point of being with them in my opinion
(and I still love you even when you tell me off for quiting races)

Oh that's lovely - I do hope you're still running together and having fun when you've been together 20 years. So many of our friends think Eric and I are so very odd, because he's started running with me (well, ahead of me - way ahead of me! ha ha!) and yes, when I want to quit, Eric reminds me that I sooo want to up my game a little. without him I'd never have run that 10K in Athens, I really didn't feel up to it, but I did it and felt so good for pushing myself.0

hmmm seems at some point during my marathon I might have gave myself a stress fracture of the metatarsel...:eek:.
That might explain the pain a few days after when I did 4 miles on it :rotfl:.Cabbage Patch 09 - 10m - 1hr 06mLeicester 09 -1/2 - 1h 26m0 -

Got my time for the South London 10k. 46:06 chip time. I was 108th out of 455 (although two people in front of me had slower chip times). Now got to find the next 10k so I can go sub 46mins
That brings your 10K time, at 58.51%, almost in line with your 5K performance at 59.10%. Good work!:DGt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Hi all,
Glad to say I'm recovered back on my feet. Did a slow 5-ish miles on Sunday to ease me back into it. Felt it in my legs a bit, yesterday, which just goes to show how quickly they get used to doing nothing. Played football (1hr) last night, so can still feel that in my legs too. Got another footie game this lunchtime (40 min), plus a 45min game tomorrow night. Nothing like diving right back in, is there?! Thursday will be a slow run or a rest day, depending on how I'm feeling. Trying to get back on track with my training plan while still being sensible about it!
Am thinking I'll have to give up the football at some stage, though. The last thing I want is to pick up an injury 4 weeks before my marathon in April. Am thinking of hanging up the boots at Christmas, until May. Or limiting the footie to friendly kick-abouts, while knocking the league games on the head. The other consideration is that while footie is good fartlek training (I think), I'm not really getting much mileage done during it and I'm going to have to devote more and more time to running as the marathon approaches. Has anyone else had this dilemma? Your thoughts?Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
Just caught up on your marathon result UK - well done! :T
Decided to do a slow run last night as throat was sore and nose was stuffed up, went very gently and ended up doing about 5 miles - don't know exactly how long as mapping sites don't appear to be working on my PC this morning  Felt like it really cleared my lungs out (especially the big coughing fit half way round) but feeling a bit rough this morning - am going to fight this cold though - grrr!Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0 -

Its not too bad if you can go straight into 5 milers, BT! And it is a long time to April after all.
As far as football is concerned, it obviously develops and maintains fitness of a certain type. However, the benefits for endurance running are probably minimal and obviously add substantially to the injury risks.
Football is more like an interval session with reps of 20m-100m which, from a muscle endurance perspective, is next to useless. The benefits start to accumulate once you are about 2 minutes into a rep which is a point that you would never reach during a football match.
So you're pretty much right in that, as far as your marathon training goes, football represents very little gain and lots of risk...........Gt NW 1/2 Marathon 21/2/2010 (Target=1:22:59) (6:20/mile) 1:22:47 (6:19):j:j

Well I was off sick for just over a week in the end, so not that long. I had only done cr&ppy treadmill running in the states the 2 weeks before, though. I would have been a bit worried if I didn't have a slow 5 miles in me.
That's pretty much what I thought about football. Good for muscle strength, but I don't really need any more muscle strength, it's all about the muscle stamina.
Some pro footballers have been known to cover up to 20km in a game, but that is fairly exceptional and it's all in short bursts, with light jogging in between. It's a different type of fitness, as you say. I suppose that's why some ex-footballers taking part in marathons post less than impressive times; they may be fit, but unless they re-train themselves to be endurance runners, it's not enough.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0
