Just had having a quick read to catch up and saw your sad news Pam - I know that in many ways your Mother's recent suffering means that she is more at peace now, but it still must be an awful shock for you and so my thoughts are with you.

Hi all, hugs to all who are feeling down. Hope you are all keeping warm. I had a hairy moment earlier today, after venturing out on a shopping trip, when I got the car stuck cornerways in my steep drive. Fortunately all was well though due to the kindness of three of my big strong neighbours. I have, however, learned my lesson now, the car stays inside until this icy weather is over.

Just wanted to share a pattern idea with you all. My partner wanted a cowl which he could tighten at the top with a drawstring so I modified the 'Gloria' pattern as follows. I used a cream DK yarn and size 8 (4.0) circular needles but dpns would be ok too. It is very easy and fun to make.

    GLORIA COWL
Loosely cast on an odd number of stitches - around 99 stitches (place marker at start of round)
join - be sure that your stitches are not twisted
    Knit 1 round
    Seed stitch (K1, P1) around 3 rounds (round 2 starts with P1)
knit, knit, knit - I knit until I was almost out of yarn - about 12 inches

About an inch before reaching the desired length of the cowl create a row of holes for the drawstring.
I just did a "yarn round needle" on next round (*k10 then y.o.n* repeat to end) then on the following round (above the y.o.n.) knit, slip, psso (that gets rid of the extra stitches you have made).
    Knit a couple more rounds.
To finish, knit 3 rounds of seed stitch, knit 1 round and bind off.

Crochet a chain to the length you want the drawstring (mine is approx 32 ins). Finish your chain and sew in both ends. Thread the drawstring through the holes in cowl and tie a double knot on each end.

I was really pleased with the result and there is another advantage that if required, the drawstring can be pulled in really tight and tied, making the cowl into a hat.

    Hope this is useful.
    Regards, K
