It does to many people, students are not the only ones unfortunately who struggle to make ends meet.

10 extra miles of petrol per day means quite alot to a student...
  • If funding ten miles a day worth of petrol is a problem he could simply try alternative transport. Five miles each way is nothing.

I use to ride a bike 3 miles to college occasionally using bus or get a lift and I had to also work part time to make ends meet this was in the 80's recession. Oh almost forgot plus I did a night course too

Except in Scotland where SAAS over it to those who have to travel over a certain distance to attend.
The only stipulation SAAS has for Scottish students applying for travel expenses is that they pay for the first £159 of their travel costs themselves, so if you pay out more than that you will get the difference, regardless of how near or far you are to your place of education.
Last year my travel for the year came to £776, so SAAS gave me £600 odd quid, just in time for Christmas too :)
Being a student in Scotland rocks :)

  • Your quite right, I travel 45 miles each way to study so always got the max of £1100 and didn't even bother looking at conditions as I figured if I didn't meet them very few would.

No but it does have an effect on what is a loan and what is am grant

And that only becomes relevant at the point when you have to pay it back - you get the same money in the short term as it is just made up of grant and loan, rather than just loan. I did not work whilst at uni and had 2 children to support (my hubby worked, but I qualifed for some grant); I had to travel 60 miles per day for 4 days per week and was not entitled to a penny. I am now working and have to pay back my loan like you will when you earn over 15k per year. It therefore doesn't matter how your money is made up.
