Fuel allowance...

I drive around 5 miles into university and 5 miles back everyday, any idea if there are any fuel allowances that apply to me?
I heard there might be...

depends why you go there, and whether you are employed ( by the uni or elsewhere) or self employed

    It's a full-time undergraduate course, I have a part-time job but heard this wasn't relevant as it's a "full-time" course??

This ought to be paid out of your student loan. I commute into London every day which costs me ~£1330 a term. This has to come out of my student finance and anything I earn. Students make choices on where they live while they're students and this should take into consideration things like transport. The student loans are there to pay for things such as rent and travel. You're not alone, most students I know have some costs to pay to travel to university so I think it'd be unfair if some students got that paid for them and others didn't. On saying that, if you find somewhere, I'd love to have my train ticket paid for me ;)

2 people I know went to a higher education college and got fuel allowance, slightly different than university and I think they got student loans so same principle I would have thought?
Do you have to pay your student loan back?
I have to pay mine back because my parents earn too much to get it free like alot of my friends, but lets look at it realistically, my parents aren't giving me a penny towards uni so what difference does it make!?

There appears to be a possible allowance for disabled students
Travel allowance: for extra travel costs you have because of your disability. For example, if you need a taxi when other students use public transport, you'll get the difference between the two fares.

otherwise it looks like its solely an expense you have to cover yourself, from grant, loan, income or savings

  • I have to commute around 48 miles a day, either way.

It was my decision and it doesn't bother me, however, I am entitled to no fuel allowance from my university.

    hmm... seems quite unfair
that said I live so close I'm not fully entitled to accomodation as it's so oversubscribed so I forced into driving really

My daughter is disabled she lives approximately a mile from college she gets EMA but has to pay 1/3rd for transport (taxi) to college) each year. This ends on her 19 birthday next year
