Housing Shortfall approaching 1 million

People who live in London (or any other major city and many towns) do so, preusumably, because their job or industry is based there, they enjoy the living there or their family / friends live there.
Building a load of 'tinpot newbuilds' in rural Lincolnshire, for example, won't mean that people from towns or cities will want or be able to move there, even if they are very cheap. Hence the supply and demand peaks and troughs that we see all over the country.
People aren't 'crammed in to London' so a few 'country dwellers can enjoy open spaces'. Lots of people live in London because they choose to do so for one reason or another.
But building some newbuilds in Surrey, Sussex, Bucks, Kent, Herts, etc and laying on a few more trains would help a lot of ftbs who cannot afford to buy at present. Also council houses could be built in these areas. There are many people on the housing list who have been told they'll get a house in maybe 70 years. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
I love the bears on this site.
One minute new builds are rabbit hutches the next minute 2 adult families should be happy to share one house.
All in an effort to talk down the market get a cheap house for themselves.

see where you're coming from but can't find any posts where I said anything like that tbf
kinda feeling that a family should live in a house imo and that there should be enough of them to live in. we should ensure that there are enough houses to live in - this is not the same as ensuring there are enough houses to buyPrefer girls to money0 -

It is entertaining watching them flip-flop around though.
The evidence is clear. There is a MASSIVE housing shortage in the UK.
Prices will remain high unless a lot more houses are built.
It's that simple.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.”

I've said both; I've said both that I've shared as an adult (not newbuilds, but flats) and that I don't think many of the new build flats are large enough for families. I don't believe the two are mutually exclusive. I also think large flats, as opposed to houses, can be suitable for families: and have been in the past.0 -
i dont think many of the new builds are much cop either tbh. just dont understand why its necessary for every single person to own when there are plenty houses to rent
i mean, im a bear over here and I;d rather we didn't build more housesPrefer girls to money0 -

I think there is room for well thought out new building. I do not think buying is in everyone's best interests, and agree with you there is not a ''need;; for everyone to own, but I do think as it stands it is not an unwise long term financial decision in this country and has rapidly found a deeply held love in the British.0 -

that may well be true but to live somewhere is a need. to own it is a want.
if there are people without the former then there is something fundamentally wrong with society. the same cannot be said about the latter.Prefer girls to money0 -
ie we should be making sure we are providing enough houses for people to live in. There is no moral imperative in making sure that everyone can hang a pet on the wall and own a picture
(tho tbf i speak as a renter who actually has a pet on the wall)Prefer girls to money0 -
You make it sound like everyone who lives in the country are landed gentry. If that is what you think then pop down to the West Country for a day and you will see plenty of straw chewing people earning the min wage. But I;m also sure that if you asked them (me !) they wouldn't want tinpot newbuilds in the middle of Dartmoor. So why not cover it with tinpot newbuilds, if people need places to live. Why should the countryside be enjoyed by the select few? Why should everyone be crammed togeher in London so that a few country dwellers can enjoy the open spaces?
Also not EVERYONE is crammed together in London. A few of us survive alright out side the capital.0
