scheming_gypsy wrote:no no no!! it won't work.. The router is giving IP's from the 192.168.2 range
Router = 192.168.2.1
Laptop = 192.168.2.2 (probably)
The PC's IP address isn't being picked up from the router but somewhere else.
sorry yes i believe you are right, the PC should be similar to the laptop but with a slightly higher no at the end . for example i have a pc with 192.168.2.4 and laptop is 192.168.2.6,0 -
169.254.5.56 and subnet 255.255.0.0 are the Windows defaults for an internal private network when the adapter cannot detect settings from the router.
On the wireless router do you have SSID Enabled? Are you using the same Channel for the pc wireless card as the router? Are you using MAC filtering and WEP or WPA in the router? If so have you applied the encryption to the pc wireless card?

Access your router set-up (enter 192.168.2.1 in the address of your browser on the laptop). Look for the Wireless Settings and Security menus. See if you can find the name of the SSID (that's the name given to your wireless connection by the router - the default will probably be something like 'Belkin.' Note it down. Check what channel number it's using - probably 11 or 13. Then in the Security settings see if Security is enabled (WPA or WEP) and whether or not MAC filtering is enabled.
Make a note of these settings and rerun the Wireless Network Wizard on your PC and enter the same settings.
Also on your PC go to control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services and scroll down to the bottom and check that the Wireless Zero Service is showing 'Started'
