I've kinda got bored of fb anyway now I've got as far as I can on farmtown!

I was being sarcy. :D My colleague has plenty of work to do. Oh I wish Facebook was blocked where I work.

  • Seriously get a grip of yourself, your employers are arranging the training for you, there is work once you have done the training so it is just a case of waiting for the training. You aren't really facing redundancy any more than anyone else.

You will look back on this time fondly when you are rushed off your feet!

If there really is nothing you can do to usefully help in the office while you are quiet (are you sure you can't tidy the stationary cupboard/do some filing/organise the tea room/sort out a filing cabinet full of junk??? There is always loads of stuff like that in our office) then find some things to fill your time that help you look like you are being useful.

    - Be the first to do the tea run Ok so no reason why you can't do this one - your colleagues will love you for it!

    - Make sure your work space is tidy and neat and organised, re-label stuff and organise folders/trade journals etc Do the same for others
my desk is spotless, we don't have folders, stuff to label, its a paperless type office I'm sure you have some stuff, records, library or something, even just personal type stuff, I have folders full of old training notes and trade journals etc that could do with sorting.

    - volunteer for everything. Are you on the social committee, charity committee, staff representative etc If you don't have this sort of thing start it up with the approval of HR. Organise a charity coffee morning etc for your colleagues.
the office already has union reps, don't have social committees, its not that sort of based. Right so why not see about starting a social comittee, organise a monthly event for all staff, you can get discounts on lots of things for groups, it will improve staff morale! We have a charity comittee too and this is part of the company's social responsibility, the comittee organise events and fund raisers and this helps improve the profile of the company etc etc Often employers will let staff do certain charity events during company time. Projects we have had included helping school children read and repainting a drop in centre as well as more general events for things like comic relief.

    - See if you can be the first aider or fire marshall. they already have a specific job profiled one, because of nature of equipment, I did my online assessment though that I found on the intranet Ok so that is one useful thing you found to do.

    - Find relevent information and articles on-line, print them off and file them for future use. I have access to all the guidances relevant to my job and team. read them several times and have them electronically and the actual manual. read loads of times That isn't quite what I mean, I mean reading around your subject, for example trade journals, relevant news articles, stuff beyond what your company provides. Gen up on the law that affects your job, or technological advances in the pipeline or whatever.

    - Read MSE, do a full SoA/budget, compare your utilities etc online, you'll look busy even if it isn't work related. Done already, I own a consumer site myself as a hobby so pretty clued up here. thats why I know it would be stupid to leave Ok but this is ongoing you can devote a bit of time each week to updating your finance spreadsheets and shopping around for the best deals. You can use mobile internet on your phone for sites you cna't access on works computers, or even take in your own lap top like one of my colleagues.

    - update your cv, draft a covering letter and send it round some agencies looking for a better job. done it sent to loads and loads - being proactive is not normally a problem for me, cv on line as well on several job recruitment type sites, some send me daily emails which I read. Good keep it up

    - Make calls to "useful contacts" to build relationships, see if you can arrange "getting to know you" meetings. not that sort of environment unfortunately Ok but I'm sure there is preparatory work you can be doing.

    - Organise your email inbox, documents saved on the computer etc. done, its immaculate lol, Fair enough

    - read the news online restricted internet but yes I do this a fair bit when allowed So have we but there's a surprising amount we can access!

    - volunteer to help with or start up a staff newsletter, or a staff reward scheme (employee of the month type thing). we have an electronic one sent around by a pa, I help a bit when they have something I can do which is not often Well why not expand that staff newsletter, you could do a fun one or a regular page for the existing one. Ours has a staff interview each month with a different employee asking fun quick questions, it also has things like restaurant reviews in.

Or what about talking to HR about an employee of the month scheme and volunteering to run it. We have one where people nominate their colleagues for things they have done which fit in with the company values and once a month it is judged and the winner gets a mention in the news letter and a gift voucher. Really helps people feel valued.

    - Learn all your computer systems to the best of your ability, help others when they have difficulty, become the office expert on the computer/photocopier/printer etc. those people are always useful. Am already, showed someone how to scan to email today, took 10 mins but at least I helped Yes ok, but find online training notes on all the packages and read them, print them off and file them for other people, make yourself an expert beyond what most people can do.

There is loads you can do, think positive, you are in work and getting paid, having nothing to do is better than having something awful to do, or having so much you can't cope. Use this time to integrate yourself in the workplace and get to know your colleagues.

I know what you're getting at and in some ways you are spot on, but and typically there is a but, there isn't loads I can do. The staff are lovely and friendly and I've fitted in well, being invited to social events, and I've spent a lot of time in staffroom talking to people not neccessary about this but making sure I offer my help. Keep doing that, keep offering, people will remember it.

I do understand and appreciate what you are saying.
I found out this afternoon that the training has not been booked, I have to pass a medical first which has only just been arranged as they "forgot" despite me asking again and again for a date then I have to wait another 3 months until a place is free to do the training. I just am not happy about the whole situation I'm in, and am disgusted at how it is being dealt with.

Doing a course online is something I am looking into and will speak to my line manager to make sure its ok. There are free things that you can do on your computer even if they don't want to fund stuff, if you are reading your book because they have nothing for you to do you may as well do something that will be of benefit in the long term.

I guess its difficult to explain why there is nothing and why I can't help others without revealing who I work for and the nature of the business so I do understand this would be easy to not understand why I am so upset.

I think you really need an attitude shift about this. They are arranging the course, if they keep forgetting etc, volunteer to do it yourself, you could book the course, you could even ask the course provider to let you know if there are any cancellations for an earlier course date.

    get positive!

Hi Sweetie. I'm sorry for you, you sound dreadfully unhappy, and a lot like myself a few years ago. But, as other posters here have said, there are a lot of things going for you.

I don't mean to sound patronising or anything, but have you been to have a chat with your doctor? I really would suggest you think about it, as it sounds to me as though you might be going through a bit of a mild depression. I'm a sufferer myself, and I know how tough it can be when things are getting you down. It can be impossible to see the good things in life and to get things in perspective when you have depression and it took me so many wasted years to admit that the bad things in life weren't my fault and that I needed some help to work through my problems.

You have so much going for you. You have a job, a relationship and somewhere to live. You are clearly also intelligent enough to know that your job is not stimulating for you. But these are troubled economic times and so many folk are out of work, that the wisest thing probably is to sit tight for now.

But - this situation won't last forever. You won't always be working for this company for the rest of your entire life; one day you will be able to look back on this time and say to yourself "I made it through that time." It will be alright. Honestly.

I seriously would advise you to just go and have a chat with your GP though. It's important to take care of yourself - you are special and a one-off in the world, and you owe it to yourself to be happy. Maybe the GP will say you're OK, just a bit down, or maybe he/she can suggest something that will help you to get through this rocky patch.

Whatever you do, take care of yourself, and I hope life starts looking brighter for you very very soon.
  • thats fair enough, I don't particularly feel like a victim, but I am extremely worried and anxious after 3 years of temping to getting something permanent it might disappear. I haven't burst into tears and have no intention of, but when I get home and look for other work and reflect on what to do sometimes it is difficult not to feel a bit crap.

I don't act like this at work and I suspect quite a few would be surprised I am so upset. I am trying not to make a big fuss at work as I may be included, but hopefully not, in the next phase of a reorganisation and am desperate for work to show I'm one worth keeping not pushed out or shoved into another corner.

    Hi Angel

is good to hear you are a bit calmer. I was thinking of you this morning. I got to work to a note from my boss on my computer screen asking me to unload the dishwasher in the new Kitchennette at work. Now, I am one that doesn't mind doing these things, but I actually object when there are tons of dirty mugs lying around and no body bothers to clean theirs. I clean mine manually every day. So being like you, totally unmotivated at work, in a very unchallenging position, bored as hell, the last thing I need is to be asked to do things like this for other people when they are clearly not bothered to clean after themselves and I don't even use the dishwasher. We have clener here, why am I supposed to do the domestic bit in a palce full of adult people?

I feel demoted and expected to do the sh88y jobs that otherwise wouldn't get done just because these people are lazy and inconsiderate and they obviously have somebody else to do it for them:mad:. I obliged because my boss loaded the dishwasher last night, but I am going to have a word with her because I am not going to be doing this on a regular basis and I will not set a precedent.
Can it get more humilliating than this? I have a masters degree and speak three languages- yet, even though my boss has acknowledged that I have clearly outgrown my job, I am asked, out of all the 50 people or so in the office to clean after them. Is it a joke or am I missing something here?

Yesterday I spent two hours putting an application for another role in a different department and after loading the stupid dishwasher I trailed the jobs board...yet again. I will get out of this and so will you.
