I don't know what to do

It was like this when I worked at the civil service, long days of doing nowt slowly drove me mad, especially when I spoke to people who'd been doing that for 30 years.
So I got a career loan, retrained and landed my dream job.
On the downside I now work 8/13 hours a day and sometimes long for my days of doing nowt - even just for a half hour or so.
I'd def start using your time to do summat else - maybe learn a language?!DEBT FREE! Sep '08/£9,800 in Oct '06 :beer:0 -
I guess one of the problems is that my dream job I got no longer exists and I've been dumped into something I don't particularly want to do even when I do get the training. I've accepted that I will just have to wait and see how it goes, but the sitting here doing nothing, I read a book today as limited internet access means not much else to do, is really getting me down.
no-one in my team was in today, they are all out on site so I sat at my desk by myself in a small office and read a book. and just wanted to go home. I wish I could get out of feeling like I do right now as its really dragging me down.0 -
I can offer no help I'm afraid, but just wanted to say how bored you must be and I can understand that must drive you crazy. I know its not your fault (and please don't think I am having a go) but I can't undertand how you have a job still, with all the cutbacks being made everywhere.
Re-training sounds a good idea, but remember at least you are being paid for going quietly insane.0 -

Now been sat in a post for a month, dumped in the corner, where there is no work to do. There is nothing to do, raising the problem gets me nowhere. Line manager is lovely but can't help due to the nature of where I work (typo). I'm just sat day after day doing nothing and I'm finding it demoralising and depressing.
Hey, I'm on the same boat, sort of, so I really understand. Is it that there is not enough work to do or that the work itslef is mind-numbing? Is it the culture of the place? If there any area in your company you would love to work in or at least you are curious about? My long-term goal is to get out of admin -type jobs and getting into production so what I started doing was to do over time helping production teams. To do this I had to directly approach the editors or producers, and I found they tend to be very nice people and super helpful in giving advice and contact names. Just the other day I had a coffee with a girl doing the job I want to do: after failing to get a job about two months ago I met with the guy that interviewed me to get feedback and he recommended me speaking to her- he passed my name and now she is going to pass on some names I can contact for some shadowing or just to offer help.
Can you do this? It might help you to keep active and interested while you find the solution . Do you want to change companies or is just the fact that you are not busy enough? I know it can be torture (here I am typing this when I shodld be doing work...):o But then myinbox woudl be empty tomorrow morning...Keep positive0 -

Stay where you are. I know is hard (been there a million times and still haven't completely got out)- think about who can help you. Think about what you can do. What needs doing? Is there a project going on that you coudl give a hand with? remember , you are being paid for doing nothing... I know is not consolation- threeweeks ago I was screaming at my boyfriend becasue he couldn't understand what my problem was... my problem was thatI was bored to tears... didn't speak to a human being in eight hours...I know is hard, but thinkof what you can do to get out of this situation or at least take advantage of it0 -
Where can I get a job doing nothing? You're so lucky really. Just enjoy it.0

Tempting as it may sound, this is not the best thing to do. It does not give a good impression if anyone walks in.
Why not find a course that you can do at your desk, to help you get another dream job? Or offer your assistance to the HR department in the event of any other admin staff being off on holiday or sick?
Or maybe start to write - short stories, poems or even a novel will give the impression of you working at your PC, even if it is all your own work

If you don't have 1st aid, ask your employers about sending you on a course.
Honestly there is stuff to do, you just have to be creative about it:) This lot know when I'm relaly bored coz thats when the duster comes out:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Very good advice... I have done that too- we have on-line training. In fact, Ill have a look and see what's available...

I can't stop laughing because that sounds exactly the same as what happened to me!!! OMG I know exactly how you feel, what I did was come up with a "boredum schedule"...
Monday.... find out the weather report in XXX and then plot it against last years report to make comparisions. Check what stationary is needed at home (eg expensive ink cartridges etc) and order on companies accounts.
Tuesday.... look for items on ebay that are no use to man nor beast...totally pointless however would look good in a museum or an old persons house.
Wednesday.... paint my finger nails. One nail an hour... except the last few which were rushed. Lunch time drinks - half way through the week - YEY!
Thursday..... guess how many beans are in a can of baked beans, and then after lunch - find out. Any brand of beans is ok but I would strongly recommend a value brand as they vary a lot more adding to the excitement of the day.
Friday.... I used to love friday, cram all the weeks work into one day, tell everyone how hard you've worked and then leave early. After getting !!!!ed at lunch of course.
As you can tell, I was pretty bored but monday morning I used to create my glowing schedule so two hours of monday were taken up by colouring in my schedule with highlighters.I run an event management company, I put on events, I go to events, if I don't know anything about events - its not worth knowing!:j:j:jNegotiate, Negotiate, and Negotiate again.:j:j:j0 -

I know exactly what you mean - I sit in my office with 2-3 other people who never seem bored or never have nothing to do - I ask them if I can help but apparently I can't. I appreciate I'm lucky in that I'm getting paid to do not much when some people are stressed over their job, but on the other hand I worry that if another round of redundancies comes round then I'll be for the chop as people probably notice I don't seem to have much to do
