I don't know what to do

Short term, but well timed idea- can you set about organising the works xmas do? You'd be surprised at how time consuming it can be...and it would give you a focus with a time schedule to work to.Only dead fish go with the flow...0

xmas do being arranged already by someone else!
the job role details involves mainly going out on site (rail industry) and to do so involves along specific training course which is not avail for quite a while, so technically there is a job there, I just don't have the required cleared skills yet.
There is nobody I can help, nor are there any projects, things don't work like that, and I know its difficult to describe or explain why without revealing too much about where I work. Other people who work there have specific training and access too what they use to do their job which I don't have.
Doing a course is one idea, but is not allowed, already read their HR information on what is and isn't allowed. I can do a course through them, but again the dates for when are just plain stupid. to be honest reading a book isn't allowed either but I can't just sit there doing nothing at all!
I'm sure for some getting paid to do nothing seems wonderful, except it isn't. I hate it, but can't afford not to stay and the pay is good.
I spoke to the work helpline, its another company they use, and they said to raise with HR and senior manager which I did. Waste of time. They said just wait for training date, which I found out today hasn't even been booked! and its not for ages anyway so no guarantee of a place. arghhhhhhhhhhhh
I really feel like xxxx right now. I can't believe this is getting to me so badly.0 -

I know it sounds bizarre but there is nothing enjoyable about sitting at a desk all day looking at an unused computer doing no work. Its also embarassing when other people are busy around you and it is not even possible to be allowed to help out, believe me I'd love to!!!!!
I'm not lucky, its boring and demoralising and I hate it.0 -
I can't stop laughing because that sounds exactly the same as what happened to me!!! OMG I know exactly how you feel, what I did was come up with a "boredum schedule"...
Monday.... find out the weather report in XXX and then plot it against last years report to make comparisions. Check what stationary is needed at home (eg expensive ink cartridges etc) and order on companies accounts.
Tuesday.... look for items on ebay that are no use to man nor beast...totally pointless however would look good in a museum or an old persons house.
Wednesday.... paint my finger nails. One nail an hour... except the last few which were rushed. Lunch time drinks - half way through the week - YEY!
Thursday..... guess how many beans are in a can of baked beans, and then after lunch - find out. Any brand of beans is ok but I would strongly recommend a value brand as they vary a lot more adding to the excitement of the day.
Friday.... I used to love friday, cram all the weeks work into one day, tell everyone how hard you've worked and then leave early. After getting !!!!ed at lunch of course.
As you can tell, I was pretty bored but monday morning I used to create my glowing schedule so two hours of monday were taken up by colouring in my schedule with highlighters.
not sure I ought to do this but it did make me smile.0 -
I had a job like this once where my boss was off sick long-term so I had nothing to do. I offered to help other depts but there was nothing available. In the end I sat and played games on my computer! I even told them that was what I was doing as there was nothing else to do and no-one said a word. Eventually though I was transferred to another dept to replace someone who left. Personally I loved getting paid for playing games!0

no games on the work computer, and they don't allow downloads...0

Exactly the same if you were unemployed!
I know, but the point is I'm not unemployed, I have a job and a decent paid one too.
Don't get me wrong, the work situation of being jobless is horrendous and thats why I couldn't bear to post in a forum where people are desperate to get work.
I want to work. I want to do well in my work but when I don't have any then what am I supposed to do?
I guess I'm not really expecting answers but I'm feeling pretty awful and although it may seem stupid I am really upset and anxious about this.
If I'm not doing any work what incentive is there to keep me employed? I'm petrified of being out of work and thats what keeps me going in sitting like an utter fool.0 -
I totally understand how you are feeling...it is depressing, demoralising and demotivating... VERY.
I would say, try to see it as a temporary situation and don't take it personally. Start looking for other employment, but don't quit this one until you are employed elsewhere and the contract is signed:D.
Use your frustration and anger at being idle to motivate yourself and find a place better suited to your personality.
I am a bit like you right now and I am waiting to hear from a job application to an iternal transfer before I apply for a placement scheme (internal too).
Boring and long, but I can't afford t get down. I have in the past and it didn't help me. I also use my spare time to do volutary work (which is giving me first class managerial experience) and enjoy my time wih my guy...
Look at the whole picture, not just your 9-5. Remember , this too shall pass!!0 -
Seriously get a grip of yourself, your employers are arranging the training for you, there is work once you have done the training so it is just a case of waiting for the training. You aren't really facing redundancy any more than anyone else.
You will look back on this time fondly when you are rushed off your feet!
If there really is nothing you can do to usefully help in the office while you are quiet (are you sure you can't tidy the stationary cupboard/do some filing/organise the tea room/sort out a filing cabinet full of junk??? There is always loads of stuff like that in our office) then find some things to fill your time that help you look like you are being useful.
- Be the first to do the tea run
- Make sure your work space is tidy and neat and organised, re-label stuff and organise folders/trade journals etc Do the same for others
- volunteer for everything. Are you on the social committee, charity committee, staff representative etc If you don't have this sort of thing start it up with the approval of HR. Organise a charity coffee morning etc for your colleagues.
- See if you can be the first aider or fire marshall.
- Find relevent information and articles on-line, print them off and file them for future use.
- Read MSE, do a full SoA/budget, compare your utilities etc online, you'll look busy even if it isn't work related.
- update your cv, draft a covering letter and send it round some agencies looking for a better job
- Make calls to "useful contacts" to build relationships, see if you can arrange "getting to know you" meetings.
- Organise your email inbox, documents saved on the computer etc.
- read the news online
- volunteer to help with or start up a staff newsletter, or a staff reward scheme (employee of the month type thing).
- Learn all your computer systems to the best of your ability, help others when they have difficulty, become the office expert on the computer/photocopier/printer etc. those people are always useful.
There is loads you can do, think positive, you are in work and getting paid, having nothing to do is better than having something awful to do, or having so much you can't cope. Use this time to integrate yourself in the workplace and get to know your colleagues.0
