If you will serve me at 4,25, then I will shop until 4.25. If you close the tills at 4 then I will finish my shopping at 4.
Not my problem - this is common practice in shops and the only way to stop it is to shut the tills at the advertised closing time - not allow customers to wander around and then moan because I can't decided which make of fish finger i want for tea.
You are there to serve me - end of story.
staff would get more abuse for that then it would be worth!

When I worked at a supermarket hardly anyone finished at closing time - they finished half an hour after closing time. Common sense really, there's a good 10-15 minutes worth of things to do after the customers have left.

I assume by "time 1/2" you're referring to the pay for that half hour. That's not a case of "lucky" and "unlucky". I'm pretty sure that's a case of "legal" and "not legal", or alternatively phrased "not a pushover" and "pushover".

What you're saying makes sense except for one problem - queues. Supermarkets HAVE to keep their tills open past 4 as many people will join the queue before 4 and get to the front after 4. However they can't possibly have a member of staff making sure no one joins the queue after 4, so they have to be allowed too.

That's fair enough, but some customers will be still shopping at 4:05 and ignoring the staff's requests to stop shopping, finally joining the back of the queue at 4:10. At that point we can't just refuse to serve them, as that would REALLY annoy them and we would like to be known for good customer service. So we would serve them, but would you call that customer blame free?

I use to work in a rubbish fast food style resturant where the owner use to turn the lights off dead on 6pm. It was awful! Customers trying to finish their food as quick as possible to get out. Although they had one guy who kept his cup of tea going for 20mins past 6pm just to prove a point. I have no idea how he stayed in business.
  • Some of discuss are not relative with my topic here. My parents are far away from me.
Even I step back,I did shopping long after 4, should they shout me all the way to cashier?
I kept my receipt, the time displayed is 4:00. I was given notice when I was near to egg shelves that I had five minutes. I took eggs which took me less than 1 minute. Then I run to the oil shelves.

Tesco sent me lots of 10 pounds vouchers to attract me as a loyal customer when I was not but lost a customer because of a unprofessional staff!
  • Such staff are really selfish and never consider employers' and customers'situation.
  • I know several shopkeepers and they both say there are a minority of customers who will always turn up ten minutes before closing time. If they then opened an hour later, these same people would still turn up ten minutes before closing time demanding their 'rights' as a customer.

Perhaps schools should teach time management .
  • I agree, working in a supermarket for 4 years before and during uni i had to deal with a lot of crap from customers, to being kept at the checkout untill 4.25 somestimes when customers think it is their god given right to keep everybody waiting for them!

You may moan, but think of the staff there, who most likely wanted to have finished work and be elsewhere! I was one of the lucky ones that got time 1/2 but most of the staff didnt!

What's the difference between that and the default attitude of most supermarket staff?

I was actually paid Time + 1/2, i was taken on just before another (very large) supermarket chain took over a smaller supermarket chain. I am not a push over, one bit! and on more than once ocassion have closed down and walked out when my shift had finished!!!!

  • I find it incredibly annoying when people turn up at the last moment when they've had all day to call in for whatever they require.
I have no qualms when they've been at work all day etc, it's the lazy !!!!!!s who think it's hilarious to walk in and expect you to be nice to them.
I work ten hour days-why on Earth would I want to stay any longer than absolute necessary?!
