Well I myself check out before but in her case it wasn't that way thus why she went to check it out. I do my own bookings..I don't trust travel agents, myself.

  • I just get the feeling "endemoniada" has been hard sold + missold this holiday. How else can you go in to TAs asking for Gran Canaria + come out with an over priced Tunisia ?

    Hard sold? Certainly. Missold? No.
    From Poland...with love.

    They are (they're)
    sitting on the floor.
    Their
books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.

What a stupid statement  how can you tie all travel agents with the same brush, i personally am one of the most honest people you would ever be so lucky to meet. I could have sold 2 girls tenerife last week easily but i knew they wanted lively and this was dead so i told them i couldnt personally sell them it and found them what they wanted for the money they had in lanzarote.
At the end of the day its all down to morales in any industry.

I think the point thats being missed here is the girl from barrhead travel sold the holiday off her viewdata system in the shop, she wouldnt know it was cheaper on thomascook.com she may not even have access to the internet in her shop. She sold it in all good faith and from where she was sitting it probably was a good deal compared to what else was on her system.
Now the problem lies with the fact that tour operators ie thomas cook in this case have too big a difference in the prices on the internet and the price in the shop, nobody minds the internet being cheaper its when its ridicuously cheaper ie £600.

I have had nothing but problems with travel agents so to me..MY STATEMENT is true and not "stupid". More often than not you will have a travel agent trying to sell the more expensive holiday.
I find it alot less stressful and 99% of the time cheaper to do my bookings myself. I know what I want and how much my budget is! I look into things and T&C's til I'm blue in the face sometimes heh to make sure I know what is and is not included etc...
IF i ever have a question regarding my travels then I post here which usually gets answered swiftly and it's free and usually useful advice. Now that's money saving in my eyes :D

How do you get a price without putting dates in and where you are flying from, She had to do something to generate a price.

The OP had internet prices for GRAN CANARIA - which was her choice of destination until the travel agent told her the cost of her flights were 'impossible' - presumably meaning that she couldn't match/beat them.
She didn't go into the travel agents with prices (or any details at all) for the holiday she eventually booked (TUNISIA).

I think people on here are probably getting snippy about replying is that people scream rip off at every oportunity even when they have not been ripped off. IMO the original poster should not be checking prices after they have booked at a price they were happy with, if they wanted to do that they should have walked away and done that and then booked.
The OP has stated that she went on the internet after booking to check out the hotel details. Probably the headline price rang alarm bells with her and she then checked the price of the holiday she'd booked.

I prefer to check out hotel though before booking not after.Personally i would never go to a high street TA and book a holiday not knowing where the heck i was really going or anything about the hotel no matter what spiel the TA gives me.
Even if i was really busy and pushed for time i would make time to research options before booking.
    I agree, sloppychops.
I'm sure the OP would concede that where she went wrong was to allow the TA to suggest a different destination that she'd done no research on.
But, it's probably a lesson learned for the future.

Yes but she stil lsearched for prices ofter the point she had booked why? and you have to put more information in a website to get prices than just a hotel.

I have no idea though how someone gets talked into going to a different country to the one they wanted and agrees on the spot, this website is how to save money, and the main way is to do research before you book anything

This wonderful phrase has shone a light in a dank and dismal thread that is really depressing.

I bought a mars bar in the corner shop and I found that Tesco were selling it for less. Quelle surprise!! Can I get my money back? Who should I complain to?

I bought something on the internet and then discovered there were many other internet retailers selling exactly the same thing cheaper! OMG!! They are so bad and must be stopped!!! Who in MSE can help me???

    etc etc etc

I think I've said this before:
The OP has stated that she went on the internet after booking to check out the hotel details. That should answer your question 'why'.
Maybe the headline price rang alarm bells with her and she then went further and checked the price of the holiday she'd booked.

I wouldn't have allowed anyone to talk me into changing my destination either - but clearly, and for whatever reason, the OP did.
I'm sure she's regretting it now and won't make the same mistake again.

Of course this is a moneysaving site - but can't you at least cut somebody who's made a mistake some slack.

Your 2 analogies bear no resemblance to the OP's situation.

If you'd said 'I bought a mars bar in the corner shop and then discovered an internet retailer selling exactly the same thing cheaper' - then that would reflect what happened.
