Based on similar experience of having had same style of working environments my opinion is that if you stay in this job you will learn what humility means, this form of conditioning may result in you putting up with crap eventually all your life from people just to 'pay the mortgage' or feed the kids.
Seeing as you have made the decision not to return, there is not anything left to say other than I wish to let you know that bullying, sex discrimination, racism etc is not only found in non-graduate jobs, I have yet to work in a place where if you put me on someone's case long enough I could have a fresh complaint every day about someone.
I would have just stayed in the toilet until my time was finished and then clocked off - I did this many years whilst night shift security, I still have the red mark on my bum. If they would complain about where I was, (nobody ever noticed me at work) id be self signed off for a week for diarrhea - enough time to find yourself a comfy pair of hush puppys or Clarks.0 -
Yeh I agree, you overreacted a little bit. Some supervisors are just mean, don't take it personally, its a job and its your first day. And whatever job you do in retail I would expect to wear black shoes, not brown ones.
As you said its up to you, but walking out without telling anyone, don't expect the job to be there tomorrow0 -
As other posters have said, there is also the context of the situation to consider. Staying in the toilet the whole shift is not really productive now is it? There's a time and a place for getting a red mark [STRIKE]up[/STRIKE] on your bum and it ain't while your at work.
extracting productivity is the whole reason management exists. my job is to do the least possible in a day and receive the most pay I can, something I feel proud of now 10 years into working life and getting better at it everyday...the protestant work ethic is primarily the cause of all this false thinking that reward will come the more you allow yourself to be exploited. OP - you left a crap job, well done for having the spine which many people have long lost.0 -

Fair point - your boss is not very good at his/her job then.
Have you not grasped the concept that in a job such as yours it might actually be easier to do the job than find ways of avoiding it? Or do you enjoy being in the toilet all night?
So your CV reads 10 years into working life give it large to gaffers, many spent on crapper.
Hi, I dont work in that job anymore - it was part time whilst at uni, I got paid to study and management was happy not to have the job of watching me so was win-win situation.
As far as the concept of avoiding work, its great to have work that you are passionate about and truly feel that it makes your time worth spent (which you have forfeited for a wage).
however I have yet to find this so instead I sell my surplus labour for the highest possible rate of exchange and make sure that those hoping to profit from the efforts of my labour will get as little as possible, this is why I could never do a job like the OP - some checkout with a stopwatch timing how fast I can scan a tin of beans per minute - id slash my wrists within a week.
I can go missing for hours and nobody comes looking for me, an excuse is always prepared of course. I have no morals about it because at the end of the day my company exists for its shareholders, they wouldnt think twice about my human suffering in their pursuit of profit on their investments.0 -
what a sad person you are hothothot. While you are spending your time avoiding work, your colleagues are having to do the work you are not doing. You take the money for doing a job - effectively you are stealing if you are not doing that job, but I do not expect you to be concerned. I am also not sure how you can say "they" are hoping to profit from your labour - you dont do anything!
In the current market where people are desperate for jobs and hardworking people are being made redundant, losing homes etc it is really gauling to read threads like yours.0 -
OK, I couldn’t just read this and pass on by. I like a good argument!!
2nd year degree student, studying what may I ask?
From my experience in the larger companies, if you don’t do what they say, as people on this board have mentioned before, they don’t need you.
But you think your managers are bad, wait until you meet the customers!!
Kudos to you for getting the job in the first place, less so for losing it on day 2, and even less for losing it in such a childish manner.
You’re parents can’t support you forever. Something may go horribly wrong. It may be unexpected, it may not. Either way you’re going to have to move on eventually and start your own life. It’ll be easier if you understand the basics.
Eventually, you may find someone you love working with, but, and this is from my personal experience, you’ll have to dig through the c**p to find the nice ones. Think of how stressful it is to them leaving their store in the hands of new staff – they can’t afford to let things go wrong, even in the slightest.
The way you reacted makes me refuse to believe you’re a degree student. You don’t disagree and say how unfair it is when lecturers set deadlines? I’d say try living with people who aren’t your parents, and you’ll find how difficult it is to try and make everybody happy.
To summarize:- Let go of your parents coattails and stand on your own two feet
- Nothing ever goes the way you plan
- A degree will get you to the first step of your career ladder 3 or 4 years behind everyone else. A part-time job will get you that one step ahead of your peers.
- Throwing a hissy fit on the starting line gets you nowhere.
- Bosses are people too.
- People suck!

I can go missing for hours and nobody comes looking for me
Presumably because the work you do isn't important, and is of no value to the company.
With your bitter attitude towards shareholders and profits you'll never make it to the top in the real world. You're always going to sit at the bottom of a very big pile.
I'm happy for you. But I'd rather make the most out of my life - not the least.0 -

:rotfl: That last bit is not far from the truth.
As for the OP. Some people can't handle being shouted at and bullying is just horrid. I for one wouldn't have 'put up with it' ...or should i say I'd have run off scared, and i have no trouble in saying it. It is a bad trait in the world of work, some people just have the ability to 'suck it up', i don't.
However, i wouldn't have come across to the manager as being self important.
You don't need a job and your parents are happy to support you, i don't see a problem with you leaving. Look elsewhere, there won't be idiots in every place of work. Every single employer/manager/supervisor I've had have been nice to me.0
