Ok, im going to explain this situation but I am not going to go naming the specific store that I was working at or anything, as I feel it isn’t relevant, the job I was doing is Saturday and Sunday work and was contacted to work on the tills

anyway, I started yesterday and had an induction, I was told ONLY YESTERDAY that I had to have black shoes for this job, all I was told when I was offered the job over the phone was the colour of shirt and trousers, nothing to do with the shoes

the person who took us through our induction yesterday (a kind of manager/supervisor person...she isn’t as high up as management but she is like head supervisor or something) inspected all our uniforms (8 of us on induction), and she mentioned that I had dark brown shoes on, and I said that I would get some back shoes (this is reasonable isn’t it?)

Anyway, I was working all day there yesterday from 9:00am until 5:30pm, my contracted hours said I was due in the next day at 11:00am, when the store opened (this is on a Sunday) and when I arrived, she shouted at me for not wearing black shoes!! and I reminded her that I said I would get some but obviously didn’t have time to buy them between 5:30pm the day before and 11:00am the next day when it was a Sunday morning...and she called a supervisor over to basically gang up on me and was saying "look at his uniform, he cant go on the tills dressed like that!!!" she also shouted at me because I had my bag on me and I was asking her where I should put it and they haven’t provided me with a locker...I was trying to find her to ask her where I could leave my bag (somewhere locked/secure obviously) but she shouted at me for asking her that as well, saying I should have left it where everyone put their bag yesterday (in the cash office) I was under the impression that we would be getting lockers and I was expecting to be allocated one today so that’s why I asked

I must point out that the particular company in question does NOT provide any uniform, they tell us we have to provide it ourselves, and they should give a week or so to make any adjustments, she just told me that "you were on induction yesterday, so I could let you off" also she started saying my trousers were wrong when she didn’t mention my trousers the day before, and she said "well, I didn’t have time to point out EVERYTHING wrong with everyone’s uniform yesterday"

anyway, I just felt like I was set up to fail, like they were being too demanding and not giving me enough time to sort things out, so after she shouted at me, I walked off and went to find the manager, now the proper store manager was not in (as it is a Sunday) so the assistant manager was 'store manager' in effect....anyway, when I explained it to him he was like "im sure she is just having a bad day, im sure she will apologise to you later" blah blah blah, like he was sweeping it under the rug...and when I said that I don’t expect to be treated like that (oh , plus the store manager said that he was perfectly happy for me to serve on tills in the uniform I was wearing and that there wasn’t anything majorly wrong with it, it was good enough for now - considering I had to provide it all myself and I only got told the exact list the day before)

Then I started to say that if that’s how they treat people in this store then maybe it’s not the kind of place I want to work in and he said "I think you are over-reacting"! again making it seem like it is my fault , then he was saying "I don’t know if this is your first job..." and was telling me that, well this is what working life is like and I’d better get used to it and saying that I need to toughen up

anyway, I said that after being shouted at (I was a bit shaken up as I took to the training really well the day before and was ready to start the next day and I was actually looking forward to it) I didn’t feel like going straight on the tills and serving customers after I had been shouted at like that and being made a spectacle of by the so called supervisor and that if I was allowed to start next Saturday and in the meantime buy the proper uniform, then start properly next week, rather than be shoved on the tills when I had only been there 1 day and being told my uniform wasn’t right (this store is very, very busy, its not the kind of place where you serve 2 customers an hour, in this store from when the doors open to when they shut it is not stop serving)

then someone else who is also like a senior supervisor said to me (this is while I was speaking to the store manager) that when she 1st started there was a supervisor that used to come up to her every day for 3 months, fold her arms and say "....I’ve got a problem with you".......so basically they were saying, it happens to all of us etc..

anyway, I said that I wanted to get my bag and then I went in the toilets for a bit and contemplated whether I should go back out there and work (as I felt like I was trapped and being forced to put up with those working conditions which need to be addressed) or do I just walk out the door with my dignity and self respect and just leave the bunch or a***holes behind! anyway, by the time I came out the toilets, the managers had left and I just put my coat on and left the store, I don’t feel I deserve to be treated like that, and I don’t see why I should be giving them 2nd chances so early on in employment...if that is how they are going to treat new people, then how are they going to treat people that have been there for ages and they find out what their weak points are..

I know this post is long, but for some background on me, I am studying a degree (on my 2nd year now, I got all a's in my exams), I volunteer at a very, very famous establishment (where I have had no complaints) and doing part time work was just a thing on the side, I live at home and my parents don’t mind supporting me while in education and don’t pressure-ise me into getting a part time job, so I guess that is one of the reasons why I walked out as its not like if I didn’t work there I would go hungry or anything

anyway, I plan to speak with the proper store manager 1st thing tomorrow (the proper store manager who wasn’t in today) and ask if I can come back to the store and speak to her face to face to explain what had happened and why I walked out and see what she says, if she supports me, I may consider staying (when the store manager interviewed me she said it was the best interview she had ever done there in 10 years! I answered all the questions correctly with excellent evidence of my abilities and skills) so I know they would want me to work there as they know I would be a good employee....I just feel that the way they treat staff isn’t up to my standards that would keep me working there

so im just posting this on here to see what people think, when I got home and told my mum she said that I done the right thing by not putting up with it especially on my 2nd day and by not being forced to stay there and treated like that when I felt I was set up to fail over something which I could not change over night!

Opinions?

oh and if anyone is thinking that I shouldn’t have walked out because that’s misconduct/not showing commitment or whatever, it was my 2d morning, I didn’t feel I owed the company anything, and they didn’t live up to my expectations and I felt it was all 1 way with me making all the effort, plus we got given reference forms for 2 people to write references about us and they told us to bring them back to them within 1 week all completed!!!! Or we would be in trouble... but it didn’t occur to them that maybe we wouldn’t SEE the people we would get references from during the week

Basically this particular store sets some things too high (very demanding, changing of uniform overnight) ...but then the other way around the standard are low in how they treat employees

Also last thing, I had an interview on the Wednesday, got told I got the job on Thursday and started Saturday, all this while juggling my degree which started again this week, so it was all a bit rushed..

Also, at the induction, someone turned up an hour and a half late plus not wearing their uniform and wearing a grey cardigan with blue and pink stripes on it!!! And they told her she couldn’t go on the tills for the induction (fair enough..but they didn’t shout at her) then when I turned up wearing 90% the right thing, which I promised the other 10% I would fix in the next week, I get shouted at!!! Plus she brought up things she didn’t bring up the day before because she let me off on induction day..But if she didn’t mention it how am I supposed to change it?

also, I thought inductions lasted more than 1 day...it was like training 1 day then the next day *wallop* you're in the deep end and you aren’t allowed to ask any questions because you should know it already....

plus 1 last point, I was supposed to be provided with clock in details (so they could see when I came and went), a till number (so I could go on my own till) and a locker or somewhere secure to put my bag...and I was not provided with any of these and was not told when I was going to get them...so they didn’t get things sorted out for me yet...yet they expect me to know it all already after 1 day...

people might not think this is the worst work situation to happen in the world, but keep in mind this was my 2nd morning there and im just wondering what would happen if i stay and if it would get worse...

I've started a job before and was told off about my shoes. I was wearing those black plimsol type shoes instead of leather heels or court shoes and got told not to do it again. So I didn't.

Although many don't appreciate being spoken to like that, you'll always find jumped up jobsworths trying to enforce every rule to the letter (think Gareth from the Office) and you just have to deal with it. At the moment you sound like you have no respect for any authority at all! Personally I'd just suck it up and get on with the job. How will walking out after a day look on your CV?

Or not mention the job at all on your CV

This is the kind of situation that if you can turn it around, you'll have some great experiences to talk about in future interviews. Sadly, not everyone loves having good workers, and there are some bitter people out there. But that's their problem. Be have with dignity and keep your self-respect, but don't make issues out of everything or people will start flinching when you approach. (I'm not saying that you have).

Big companies can quite often treat employees relatively badly. On the plus side, they're a good name to have on your CV, and are usually in a position to be more flexible with working hours.

Speak to the manager, and start again next Saturday. You don't have to stay forever but give it another go.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

I would give it a 3 week trial and see. That's my opinion.

  • Everything depends on how much you need the money, and how much you need the job. I would just exclude it from my CV. But I would also have not allowed this unreasonable and unfair behaviour from this jobsmith. No-one should be shouting at you. If what you have said is true, then you need to show that you will be flexible and will respect authority, but that you will not be bullied.

Just always keep calm and be reasonable and you should be fine.

I have to say though, that there are so many bullies in jobs, and whilst leaving this one may be fine, a time will come when you will have built up a need to stay in the job, and you will have to put up with things. Nevertheless, this all sounds beyond the pale.

Personally, I wouldn't be in a job (unless it was very much on my career path) that required me to buy a special uniform out of my own pocket, then chastised me for not wearing it on day 2.

Good luck with your career and future. I've just finished 45 years of working life, and I have been bullied - get someone senior on your side.

The till number issue isnt relevant as its up to them to sort out, keep on aksing about the locker and the clock in number, is there not a HR dept as they normally do the clock in numbers, what i mena is that the till number isnt all that important so dont worry about it

I think, being brutally honest, that you'll be very lucky if they are willing to take you back next Saturday. But by all means try to speak to the store manager on Monday.

However, from their point of view, you disappeared into the toilets, then disappeared altogether. I don't know how long you were in the toilets for, but in a busy store did you really expect a manager to have nothing better to do than wait outside the toilet for you?

I'm not saying the way they treated you was right, but you seem to have a very inflated opinion of your own worth, and that's not necessarily going to get you very far.
