my sons LOTR rings would be tang :-) i have a cousin called arwen, she thought it was an ancient welsh name then the film came out and she realised she was named after an elf ;D
when i had my boy i did like the name Cain, but it was considered too wierd. there's a kane at school and nobody bats an eyelid though, and a distant cousin has just been christened kane (he has a brother named kieran).
someone told me once that tanya is not a real name, it was invented by shakespeare. if true it shows that only some unusual names are laughed at, others become common and are accepted. maybe in a few years time people won't snigger at girls named chardonnay?
the name wendy was invented by jm barrie for the story of peter pan and the name vanessa is also made up.
no one would think them unusual now.0 -
Surely all names have to be made up at some point?
If you are called Gary, you are named after a town in Indiana. ;D0 -

Anyway back on topic- can anyone with an older child tell me if people continue to question what you do - i know i came across peoples views (wanted or not ::)) last year when choosing which infant school to send eldest too
Learn not to take it too much to heart. People often mean well, and sometimes it's useful to have another opinion. But at the end of the day it's your child, your choice.
Mine have, until secondary, gone to 'unpopular' schools, so I've been dealing with the raised eyebrows for ever, but no regrets. They were the right schools for my children, the schools did not deserve the rotten reputations they had, and the kids thrived there. The horror stories I heard all dated back at least 5 years previously to different headteachers, and I could tell you recent horror stories about schools people were queuing up to get their kids into!

As a new mum, I have been amazed at the attitude of some people!
Recently while on a shopping trip, i stopped to feed my son, while sitting happily giving him his bottle, an old man approached me and tried to lecture me on the benefits of breast feeding, and how this would be so much better for him than "That stupid bottle" i was apparently "shoving down his throat"!!!!!!!!!!! I was raging and still get angry when i think about it!
I have also noticed that people are very intolerent of mums or dads with prams in shops, where exactly are you supposed to leave your child while shopping???
Is this just me or have others noticed that having a baby with you seems to give people the right to stick their oar in???????
;D
Final rant.......why is it 4:09am and i cant get to sleep!!!!!!!!
i find that in shops some muppets think its ok to push in front of people who have prams...i always give a piece of my mind...the last guy said go outside if you want...i said you wont get there mate and then the security staff jumped in and escorted him outside....stupid muppet....some people think they are above everyone else....my wife used to complain about every day....i then went with her shopping and the by the 4th occurence i was ready to lamp one of these muppets....only thing stopping me was i didnt want my son to see....grrStevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -

I work in a school and you can imagine all the names i come across, the newest arrivals are
Jupiter Heggarty and Willow
My name was unusual when i was at school (Heidi) and i hated it and wanted to change my name to my middle name ( Jane) all teachers would always pick people with unusual names to do anything, so i was always selected.
Now i love my name and wouldn't change it for the world its a conversation starter but it has become a more popular name now, so it can't be that bad.! ::)They call me Mr Pig!0
