When in hospital having had twins midwife popped into my room to laugh where no one could see her. She had just asked a couple what they were calling their son. They replied proudly Thor

Oh that is unusual she replied politeley

Yes it means strength they said

I asked midwife if they also realised it was the god of thunder but she did not dare tell them.

I know it sounds very unlikely but it really did happen.

I would love to know if they really did call the kid Thor and if they had a daughter would she be Freya? ;D ;D

with all due respect - this is exactly what i mean ::)

why shouldn't someone be able to name their baby what they want without people passing comment on their choice? :-/

anyway off to start a discussion on DT about unusual names ;D

I am assuming that your last comment was tongue in cheek as imagine the teasing that the poor little kid would have to endiure.

I take the view that if you have information that another person does not and it is relevant then it is a good idea to let them know.

The whole point of having a choice is that it is informed or else it is not really a choice at all.

No it wasn't tongue in cheek. As i read the name Thor i did not immediately think about thunder nor would i think most kids would when they started nursery.

even if you took a popular name out of the top 20 - someone would comment they'll be sat in a class full of them.

anyway i've started a thread on the subject in DT

i'm not being argumentative (just sitting on the fence lol!) but i do think it's very hard for kids with unusual names ... like the twins next door to my sister called tyson and dyson (dyson - can that really be justified?). there are kids at my nephews nursery called sky black and storm black, and a kid whose surname is Key has the first name alan. it's not just adults, all the children laugh at them, it can't be very nice :-(

if i seriously called my child rainbow it would have a horrible time ...

it's also really dull having a common name. i never liked being called sharon and i can't say that many of the connors in my sons class are that keen on having the same name as 6 other boys in the class either. i think it's best to have a name that's in the most popular hundred or so but not the most popular.

by the way poppy i envy your friend being called eloise, i love that name. it was made slightly more popular by 'the damned' in the 80's and there was also a character called eloise in a BBC sunday drama a few years ago (sex, chips and rock n roll). there's a character named elloise in an unfinished jane austen novel too. i think it's a really lovely name. i can't choose it for my children because the surname beings with an 's' and names that run into the surname don't sound right. there was an eloise at my son's nursery and everyone thought it was a lovely name.

  • Yeah, point taken, not nice to laugh at names. I have a son called David, pretty normal, but if he had been a girl, his name was to be Morven, as its my fav, Loads of folk laughed at that, and i was offended. So, Sorry to poor Thor for laughing at him :-[

My husband has said that if we have another, he'd (jokingly) like to give his middle name as Urban ;D Mind you, he wanted Boniface or Pious for the first 2 ;D :o ;D (Can you guess his religion?)

As it happens, my boys middle names are Benedict and Christian. I'm not Catholic - just love the names and they match the first names. On hearing of the birth and naming of No 1, MIL said "Benedict? Where on earth did that come from?" (tone of disgust in voice)

Mind you, I'm not having any more (I hope :D )

Remember its the children who have to live with the name not the parents. Striving for unusual names is really just the parents saying 'look my child is wonderful and unique - like his/her name'. Girls I think handle odd names better than boys. Another thing you should be careful of when naming kids is their initials. i.e. John Charles Brown had the nickname "Dumper" due to his initials being JCB. A David Edward Smith would be "Des". I am always surprised at how quick kids are to give nick names even in primary school.

Ps hope Thor doesn't have a lisp.
