I will open doors for people with prams etc but a large number of those people do not bother to say thank you.  In addition, not all parents are considerate and think they can just leave prams and pushchairs whereever they like regardless of other people and safety factors.

It is these people that make it worse for those parents who wil be considerate but still need to get their prams through shops etc.  I have seen people shove prams out of the way just to get past, when they only need to take a few extra steps to go around it.

There is no excuse for people telling a new mother how she should or shouldn't feed her baby. That is no-one's business but hers.

In relation to the doors in shopping centres, I always use the automatic ones in my local town as I find the ordinary doors far to heavy to push or pull.  I always give way though to people with children and those in wheelchairs or with walking sticks etc.

    My thoughts exactly...

Sorry but Alan Key is funny! ;D

I've got an unusual name and when I first started work I changed it to Sarah, but I missed my real name so reverted back.

Yes, I got the mick taken out of me big time, especially at a Scottish primary school (dont want to talk about the reasoning but anyone in Scotland will know why) but at the end of the day it's pretty unique, even if half the population can't pronounce it properly!!

apologies if this annoys anyone but i'm also going to copy this rambling message of mine into spendless's thread.

yup, i think alan key should be illegal as a name lol! i did read in a baby naming book once that a couple were prevented from naming their daughter 'diet'.

i don't think my mum was thinking too hard when she gave my brother the initials A S S either.

having given my son an ordinary name (ciaran) that's not too common in england but also has about 8 different spellings i can honestly say i wouldn't want to give another child a name that will always be spelled wrong and misread, people even call him karen! i thought that was the way to spell it, i saw jane eyre while i was pregnant and that's the way the actor Ciaran Hinds name is spelled, but nobody at my son's school spells it right. he gets spelling mistakes on his school certificates, birthday and xmas cards have a variety of spellings, even from relatives! he has said that he wishes he had a name that everyone could spell properly. perhaps girls cope with unusual names better than boys, for a girl an unusual name is probably seen as quite romantic, but my boy doesn't like it, and his name isn't even that unusual. he likes his name, he just hates all the different spelling combinations. he knows 3 other ciarans in our town (but they all go to different schools) and each one of them has a different spelling for their name.

as for unusual names, i think most kids have enough opportunity to make their own name up, most kids have tags for the computer, for email, MSN, etc. plenty of scope for kids to name themself after top gun or LOTR characters if they think their real name is boring. i was a moonchild on the uni computer system but wouldn't like it as my real name lol! if an unusual name is chosen i think it's kind to have an ordinary name for the middle name in case the child wants to use it as an alternative.

hi bargain bunny and all :)

Have you tried the LOTR name translator?

    http://www.lotruk.com/nametranslator/

You get some fascinating results ;D and I'm not sure people would want to use this as an alternative, but it's good fun for a few minutes. Plus if anyone did want something different for a child's name - they'd definitely find it here ;D

    Apologies for going off topic.

    Hello everyone :)

My original post was about people commenting on what other people have chosen as names, which to me applies to someone choosing the name John just as much as someone choosing the name Zebedee.

I did think we'd pick up on unusual names though, which is why i started a thread in DT.

Just thought i'd mention cos one member thinks her post has been deleted cos she laughed at a name - will PM her to mention that there's another thread.

Anyway back on topic- can anyone with an older child tell me if people continue to question what you do - i know i came across peoples views (wanted or not ::)) last year when choosing which infant school to send eldest too

even when i think a child has a silly name i wouldn't mention it to the mother or to the child, i think mentioning it on here's different although hopefully nobody on here has a child named thor and got upset!

hum ... as they get older ... some people aren't as interfering, but others continue. if your child has a learning difficulty or behaviour problem you'll find everyone wants to stick their oar in and comments will be very different, some will say you're overprotective and too involved in your child's upbringing, others will suggest that you're ignorant and neglectful! as for behaviour or ADHD you'll be told you're yelling and disciplining too much and also that you're not yelling or disciplining enough. parents also like to make snide comments if your child is on a 'lower' level reading book than theirs or is fat or too skinny.

but it's not everyone, many people have relaxed by this stage and learned for themselves that all children are different and life isn't just black or white. those that do continue to pregnant dog about other mothers are the ones to be avoided :-)

my sons LOTR rings would be tang :-) i have a cousin called arwen, she thought it was an ancient welsh name then the film came out and she realised she was named after an elf ;D

when i had my boy i did like the name Cain, but it was considered too wierd. there's a kane at school and nobody bats an eyelid though, and a distant cousin has just been christened kane (he has a brother named kieran).

someone told me once that tanya is not a real name, it was invented by shakespeare. if true it shows that only some unusual names are laughed at, others become common and are accepted. maybe in a few years time people won't snigger at girls named chardonnay?
