Question about missing Gcse Exams for holiday
Comments
-
I'm a teacher (and engaged!). I'd say without doubt move the date of the honeymoon. His GCSEs are the culmination of 11 years of hard work both by your son AND his teachers. I know this will be a really special holiday but it really isn't on to stop him doing his exams.
For the record, he can next resit in November but as another poster has said he'll have no school support and is unlikely to do as well as he could have done. Also, what does he do for the rest of the year when his mates go off to college and he can't because he doen't have the qualifications? I really can't urge you strongly enough to shift the date of the honeymoon.
Thanks for that :T we will leave the honeymoon as its the wedding that is important..... Just got all excited without looking into it obviously we'll not go to Disney during his exams.... lol there doesn't seem to be a good time over the next few years, too many kids :rotfl: and we wouldn't dream of having a honeymoon without them....
Thanks everyone for all your comments looks like it will be camping in Cornwall again:D By the time they all finish their exams ds1 will be 20 you think he'll still want to come to Disney

I'm just not sure when would be a good time? Any ideas? We can't go when its too hot as ds4 is very sensitive to the sun...... Am going to do some more research as October may be ok...... :T We don't mind when the honeymoon is as its a one of trip for us all, more of a family holiday but to celebrate our wedding, if that makes sense........

Thanks so much.... you've all said exactly what I've been thinking
The wedding will be at the weekend so no school will be missed, so no problem there
The honeymoon won't happen and I'm happy for that..... We thought about that for the honeymoon before i started working out all the timings with exams..... Would have been lovely..... Easter would be way too busy over there and any later than June will be far too hot for ds4 as he is very fair skinned........
May I just say I'm not someone who lets their kids miss school for holidays as its very important to us and them.....
Ds1 has already had some results 2 C's, a B and an A but has more gcse's to take next year ( their school does it over 2 years)
Is there any other good time to take them?
oh forgot to say judging by exams this year they start mid May until end of June.0 -
I don't think it would be a good idea to take your children during his exams as it will put him behind everyone else. Also, you would probably get into trouble for this.
A friend of mine goes to Florida every year and their son got married over there last year - they tell me that October is the best time to go as in the summer months it rains almost every afternoon and that is also the time when there are lots of storms. In October its still hot but not too hot and not as humid. They had an amazing wedding over there, with a free bar for the entire day and about 50 guests who travelled over with them. The wedding cost them about £5000 in total which is a lot cheaper than they would have paid for the same thing over here. Also, they were able to get married outside which I thought was really nice and romantic.
WOuld this be a possibility for you? It would only be a little bit later in the year giving you more time to save and you could also make one of the weeks coincide with the children's half term hols!:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0 -
We had our honeymoon a couple of weeks ago. After waiting 20 years for the right time. The exams will be over by June, and schools will be on school trip/dvd watching etc time. Yes, as soon as the exams finish it'll be more expensive- but scale down & have two weeks, rather than three, and it should be do-able.
Hope you have a lovely wedding.Only dead fish go with the flow...0 -
Why not go for Christmas? I spent Christmas day at Disney Florida a few years ago. It was the most magical Christmas I have ever had. I'm sure you would all have a fantastic time then.0

My ex-husband is red-haired Irish, as are both of my daughters, and burn at the first sight of sun. Yet we went to Florida in the summer holidays without a problem. It just takes a bit more planning.
Basically we got up early every morning and were in the queue when the gates opened at 7 or 8am. By 10.30ish it was too hot for them, so we either went back to the hotel for a siesta, or went to an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet for a long leisurely lunch followed by some shopping, or planned ahead for excursions which were indoors. Then later in the afternoon we went back to the parks and stayed there until they closed at 11pm. Obviously we also did the sun-cream & hats, but none of them got sun-burnt at all, I promise you.
I know it sounds early to get up on holiday, but you can catch up on your sleep in the middle of the day. And to honest, everyone I know who's been there for a holiday, whatever time of year, comes back saying they need another holiday to get over it! So I would say just book it for after his exams and be organised, and you'll have nothing to worry about. Oh - and congratulations! And it's nice that you want to share your honeymoon with the kids.0 -

The sun's strength will not be a massive difference in just 2 weeks. Its hot in May and its hot in July.
Being sensitive to the sun makes no difference as your son will be wearing a t-shirt in the parks, mostly you will all be in the shade a lot of the time and you will definitely be wearing hats.0
