Quick Q - why not see if you can get a job in Lidl?

You can work there, and they pay a reasonable wage for a shop - round here its £7-£8 starting.

Just a quick note guys as OP states shes only just given up the law course i'm guessing she's on the new style student loans. These don't need defering they are taken straight from your wage when you are earning enough. Just make sure you've told them about your change of address.

In_hell if you are counting debt to the slc as part of your debt then cut that out of the amount as you don't need to worry about that until your both earning more. If not then maybe you could post a breakdown so we could have a better picture of what's going on.

As you started your degree. In the future have you thought about finishing it with the OU you can transfer completed credits to them. Check it out as you may get help with the fees and stuff because of your salary's and you could still work while you do it.

I think the best thing you can do for yourself right now is right a CV and give it to every single business in the area. Be it garden centre/tea shop/local shop/supermarket/pub/retirement home/school/etc.

PS Even better. Check on the OU thing and then apply to all the solicitors in the area saying you are completing your degree with the ou.

    Keep posting.

I have a friend who works in Lidl and Morrisons and one who works in Wilkos who are going to get me some application forms for evening shelf stacking- there might not be anything available but at least they will have my info if something does come up...

I didn't actually get a student loan stupidly enough :( I got an unsecured loan as we were buying a house at the time which needed quite a bit of work doing to it (when I was 18) so I decided to pay for my uni fees with that- I know it was stupid but its been done...

I can't afford to do the O.U course as it costs a fortune. I did two years of my law degree but didn't sit the end exams for year two I only did the coursework module as basically we moved away from the area from Newcastle to Wales.

The nearest uni is 120 miles away- the students are last year A-Level so take up a lot of tourist jobs and bar work to add extra income before going to uni.

I forgot to add- my A-Levels are English Lit and Language, Law, History and Sociology.

I applied for the bar that is at the other end of the area I live (nearest one) but unfortunately it was raided and found to have 6 illegal immigrants living there so the landlords are awaiting trial so it has closed, lol

And for the person who said I don't want to travel- I was travelling 110 miles ONE WAY on my older motorbike (which I sold) in the middle of winter in order to get a full time job- how many other people would be willing to do that?

Your husband has no business working in the financial sector if he can't control his own finances. Seems to me you have to go bankrupt and start again, not sure the TA will accept you with those debts, the Army certainly wouldn't.
    Sorry no sympathy from me.

  • OK....

let's try and get back on the advice theme here...

    1. Please try and break down the £250 outgoings on household expenditure a bit please... what do you buy and where do you buy it?

    2. Break out your debts ... who do you owe money to, how much do you owe, what type of debt is it, what is the interest rate, how much do you repay each month and what are the arrears?

    3. What are your husbands feelings about the debt? It appears that you are doing all the worrying and solution finding... you don't mention his attitude etc. Is he aware and understanding of the problems you are managing and BOTH of you are in? Hope you are not carrying this all alone.

    PLease respond!

we usually shop in Lidls and Tescos and usually put petrol in at Tescos as it is the nearest and cheapest petrol station, plus we get clubcard points.

Household expenditure is cat litter, food (value products and things which fill you up and last a long time such as pasta, rice, bread, etc) I make my own sauces, etc as it is a lot cheaper than buying them. toiletries (razors, womens products, deodorants, shower gel ( Tesco Value) shampoo (lidls cheapest), etc- this is only when we need them, obviously we don't buy these every week), pet food can go in that (which is frozen rodents- we get them from the cheapest place possible, cat and dog food, etc, etc) stamps, cleaning products (lidls brands as they work out cheapest, although going to look for Stardrops in Tescos as I have heard that mentioned here).

I can't break down our debts as I don't have the file on me- its at the CAB bureau as they wanted all the details so they could work out our offers- we are hopfully getting it back next week though if I can get an appointment

My husband is just as worried as me, although I probably project an unconcerned appearance to him as if his mood gets low then so does mine, we talk about it a lot, but I don't think he realises quite how low my self-esteem is with me being so unsuccessful in getting any job- even cleaning positions. And obviously me not being able to get a job makes me feel really guilty as if I had a job we wouldn't be in this mess...

The difficulty is that until we moved to Wales we both had a good income and were managing well with our finances, with me hopefully progressing and going into Law. I did have a job lined up doing full-time temporary work in the admin side of the clinic where my mum works in Wales before we moved down but unfortunately it fell through the week before we moved down to Wales as the woman who was leaving decided to stay.

can you remember even veguely what your debts are - who you how and how much? that would give us something to work on at the minute.

i still recommend lowering the bike so you can travel further and more easily to get a job - how far away is the next biggest town? i.e. one with recruitment agencies, solicitors offices etc?

OU takes all income coming in to the house in to account and as there is Approx £1400 a month coming in to the house they would be lucky to get a little help if any.

And law courses are normally the most expensive courses the OU offer.

Also the OP seems to have plugged gaps in there spending.

I know this is a long shot but what Avon, Betterware or something like that in your area. Delivery newspapers would add a little to household income.

I wish you all the best. I know it is very hard when you owe that sort of money and has been said it is only money. You have a husband who loves you and a roof over your head. I hope you can soon find a way out and find something postive in your life.

    Take care.

    Yours

Why dont you type out a standard letter asking for employment, and giving your A level qualifications, print out about 200 and send them to various offices such as solicitors, building societies, banks, travel agents, schools, estate agents, etc. Come to think of it, have you tried to find work in a school? There are often teaching assistant jobs available. Often they will take on well educated people and you dont need to have a qualification. If you wrote to every school in the area you might be successful. The money is not too bad and increases regularly.
