  • I bet if your MIL owed you the money you would be wanting it off her.

I think your MIL has been more than generous and I think you should pay her back regardless of whether she says she wants it or not.
Nature wants the human race to survive. However, it does not depend on us because we are not its only invention.
  • I know its not what you want to hear, but as everyone has said, you misinterpreted what your MIL said because that is what you wanted to 'hear'.
The money is rightfully hers, work out a payment plan with her.

Didn't the MIL say "Don't worry about paying it back" though?

Which means 'don't worry' not 'don't pay' .

I would still pay it back even if I was told not to and only accept it if the paid back cash was thrust back into my hands. THAT would be a clear message !

Even IF mil meant "don't worry about paying it back right now" then i still find it a little unfair that she expects you to give her it back as and when she needs it.

If she thinks you've got it sat in a bank account untouched then surely you might aswell give her it all back! She must expect that the money is being used.

But then again if she's been okay about it and not expected it as soon as she asks then i guess that's different.
