Making sandwiches for work lunch

Currently spend around 12.50 a week on lunch and am wanting to cut back on this (also should help me be a bit healthier) so if anyone has any advice for the following

1) Which is the best place to shop
2) What bread/fillings should i get
3) Would it be worth getting say a 10 pack of crisps for the week? Id prob want a packet of crisps to go with sarnies as im a hungry swine :S

Im trialling this for a week, see how it goes but id like it to work for obvious reasons and then if it works for me just keep doing it.

Also My friend cuts up some fruit into a sandwich box and then adds yoghurt, so i might try that

What should i be looking to spend?

Kevicho!! IM shocked at you, surely home made is the way to go? then you can have all sorts of yunny stuff, leftovers, soups, decent sandwiches you know whats in them etc.

My Ohs mum knows someone who imports sandwich fillings that go into supermarket sandwiches and other premixed sandwiches ( the masive tupperwares you see in some sandwich shops) from CHINA. God knows when they were mixed. Avoid.

If you MUST buy lunch out, go for the local retailer that people in your office recommend.

I have a quid a day on top of my luch which I bring to work, and I usually have change. ( for boredom spending like sweets mints etc)

About what bread to get - if you look for a granary or wholemeal bread, it should fill you up a bit better than white.

Not the healthiest option, obviously, but I buy my husband multi-packs of McCoy's crisps in Morrisons, and they quite often seem to have two for the price of one offers.

The fillings depend on what you enjoy, and whether you have a fridge at work. I much prefer sandwiches with lettuce though.

Do you cook a roast at the weekend? That can be great for cold meat sandwiches at the start of the week.
  • Hey Kevicho,

Here's some filling ideas for you:-

    *Mashed up egg and mayo
    *Cheese and pickle
    *Ham and coleslaw
    *Philadelphia and cucumber
    *Houmous (sp?) and peppers

Just a wee tip but if you are having salad stuff (cucumber, tomato etc) in your sandwich, don't put it in the sandwich when you make it - take it to work whole, slice it when you are about to eat the sandwich and voila! Much better then having a soggy sandwich...

You don't just have to take sandwiches - why not try salads - the usual lettuce, cucumber, pepper, tomato and spring onion with extras like ham or olives or cheese cubes etc etc. You could also try houmous (sp?) and carrot & pepper or cucumber sticks or homemade or tinned soups. Leftovers is also a great idea.

For chopped up fruit and yogurt, a banana is yummy then strawberries and kiwis together is my next fav. Nectarines or peaches and plums are also great as are grapes.

A 10 pack of crisps is a great idea as is a 6 pack of juice, unless you have free water or want to take your own diluting bottle to be a true DFW!

Good luck - let us know how you get on!

Does it have to be sandwiches? Why not pop over to the Old style board they will have loads of ideas for cheap and tasty meals.

Why not couscous with veggies. Or HM quiche with a salad etc.

If you find that sandwiches are getting a bit soggy. Why not take the makings and make the sandwiches fresh when you want to eat them.

Why not get an assortment of rolls/baps makes it nice and interesting.

    All the best.

I mainly do sandwiches/crisps/biscuit/yoghurt type of lunches.

For sandwich fillings, there's loads of choice and I tend to use what I've already got.

Eggs - egg or egg mayo (with or w/out salad)
Cheese - with pickle, or salad (personal fave with salad cream!)
Prawns (basics pack frozen) - with cocktail sauce (ketchup and mayo mixed) and lettuce
Meat - from Sunday leftovers: chicken with mayo/sweetcorn, beef, etc
Tuna - with cue, or mayo

This week I've been doing a self challenge vs M&S pasta/rice ready meals, (ooh such an exciting life I lead :rotfl: ). So pasta in a dressing as a bottom layer, chopped cue, cherry toms and lettuce, with choice on top! Filling and yummy too.

Back to sarnies next week though!

For crisps, I only buy when multi-packs are on BOGOF for value and have now got a good choice for what I fancy, as has DS for his packed lunches.

I'm a choccie biscuit fan, but again, I have 10  packets because Breakaways, Blue Ribbans and Penguins were on BOGOF and I just got 2 per week until the offer stopped.

Puddings are usually mousse or yoghurts, depending whats on BOGOF or offer! When summer fruit is in, I'll have a portion of fresh diary cream sponge with chopped strawberries and raspberries. I will not budge on this!!!

Work meals were my little luxury but i cant be bothered with them any more and it doesnt make any sense to pay that a day

Sandwiches are easy to do and i can always experiment later on but im happy for sarnies

Will probably be getting grannary bread, as i really like that

Should be shopping tommorrow so ill list what i get :)

    Should be a laugh anyways

** i dont cook otherwise, hence not having other ingredients *****

I did the same with the move to taking my lunch. It does save a good amount over the month.

I figured out the taking salad in a separate container trick (we have a small fridge at work) and making them up at lunch, much tastier. Also I have soup for lunch. Sometimes I'll make it myself (its dead easy, just chuck loads of stuff in a pot!) but often I'll just buy a fresh soup from the supermarket (99p and it lasts me two days) and add a couple of wholemeal rolls for a delicious, healthy filling lunch.

I used to buy small cartons of fruit juice (200ml) but now I take a 1 litre carton and have some each day - much cheaper.

I make the children's lunches and then end up making mine from the crusts, left over pasta, rice etc. I think of this as my 'free lunch'. I wonder how many other mums do this?
