This website is supposed to be in the interests of the consumer
Agreed, which I why I give people advice about being proactive, sending letters recorded delivery etc. which is all in their interests.
but I guess you're coming at it from another angle
My angle is dealing with the world as it is and not how I would like it to be.
but it's a designed to catch people out, which should be challenged
Ok, so go ahead and challenge it.
That would be better than discussions are here which are unfortunately fruitless as regards making any change.
Your premium could have been doubled and the first you'd know about it is when you get your credit card bill...
Only if you don't bother taking ANY action.
If people found it acceptable to be totally inactive under the old system, then they would be uninsured !!
You need to explain this part of the logic to me.
You seem to be saying it's acceptable for people to be totally inactive on the financial and insurance front and then saying you want a system that would allow them to go uninsured. Sorry but that just makes no sense to me.

The old system without auto renewal required people to be active by LAW, because they had to renew to stay legal, so you can't argue against the new system because it requires you to lift a finger. That argument is jsut not logical.

The action that you had to take under the OLD system is not any different in terms of effort to what you have to do with the new system so I don't agree with your argument that it's wrong because it requires effort.

If you don't want to "run your life by a diary" then how do you cope with car MOTs etc?
I put lots of other things in my spreadhseet as well as ato-renewal e.g. servicing, MOTs, .
Thos people who don't use ANY diary system at all and don't want to lift a finger must be running cars without MOTs and services and never attend their dental appointments ????
I presume these people never send birthday cards and forget anniversaries ???
I don't hoenstly know how anyone can live like that and still have any friends/family.

BTW - There is s/w available that can send you alerts if you want. So if you prefer an email reminder to a diary or spreadsheet then you can do it that way.

This website is supposed to be in the interests of the consumer but I guess you're coming at it from another angle. 'Consumer Revenge' it says at the top of the page. Autorenewal is 'Insurance company revenge' on those who don't run their lives by a diary. More fool them you may say but it's a designed to catch people out, which should be challenged.

I have to say I wasn't aware of cases where a renewal notices are not even sent out. This is even more shocking. Your premium could have been doubled and the first you'd know about it is when you get your credit card bill...

Companies which do not supply a notice of renewal would be on the face of it seem to go against the current guidelines

6.1.5 of ICOBS states that a firm must take reasonable steps to ensure a customer is given appropriate information about a policy in good time and in a comprehensible form so that the customer can make an informed decision about the arrangements proposed.

Whilst I have had situations where there was no option to opt out of automatic renewals on initiating the policy I have never had a situation where I was not informed about the renewal and given the option to cancel a few weeks prior to it taking effect.

If you wish to challenge the process of Auto Renewal then I would suggest complaining to the FSA is your first port of call
