I have 3 best friends that aren't related to me and 3 that are. I also consider my DH and my mum as best friends too....Im sad huh?lolYou may walk and you may run
You leave your footprints all around the sun
And every time the storm and the soul wars come
You just keep on walking0 -
My OH is my best friend and my mum comes a close second...there wouldn't be much I don't talk to her about (except personnal stuff in my relationship
).
I did have someone I THOUGHT was a very close friend. She lives in London (we met when I worked there) and we used to talk on the phone all the time and visit each other at least once a year....but when I was made redundant this year and was very, very stressed at the thought of losing my house etc, she didn't get in contact. She sent me an email a month later apologising for not getting in touch as she was 'so busy'. I realised she wasn't really interested in me and haven't contacted her since...although not a day goes past that I don't miss the friendship I thought we had."I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." hi,
apart from hubby i have 1 true friend. we have been friends since we was 8 years old (27 now). we see each other every day and go shopping etc together and spend hours on the phone talking about god knows what.
i can talk to her about everything and she knows me inside and out.
i have other `aquaintences` who i see and txt but only 1 true friend.0 -
None.
I know plenty of people who's company I am happy to share regularly or irregularly. people I work with, who I spend more time awake with than family and people I have to be polite to because their children play football for the team I coach. It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
I have a circle of friens that is huge - but we are all into the same kind of music so that's what we have in common. All a great bunch and everyone knows everyone.
Best friends wise I have
* Friend who lives in Glasgow ive known since i was 16 - call over every couple of years and see him
* Friend who i met through glasgow friend when also 16 - Don't see him very often as he is a bit odd but we are there if each other needs. He lives over here and ive not seen him for a year and a half
* Best girl friend - for 4 years now. been through our ups and downs and still going strong - one of the funniest people ive ever met. Is there in a crisis if i need and I her
* Friend who lives over here. We met through fate I believe, I met him through a charity gig i did and we just clicked and have been bessies since . He is one person i can be totally myself around and we just have fun, hang out - but i can talk to him about heavy complex stuff if i need. he knows me inside out,and I himA little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Wow! This thread has made me feel soo much better because I always thought I was odd for having no friends. I have 1 who I text occasionally and see maybe once a year and then my friend with benefits. Am very close to my family and that suits me fine, don't feel I am missing out but it always seemed that everyone else had loads of friends and I was the only one that didn't. I am a self confessed hermit tho. Have no trouble talking to people and interacting just never build up friendships with people hmmm will take that on board hahaSadly, you don't have any badges yet but keep trying! See what you could get........... oh boo hoo I am crying into my wine.0

WOW - i am amazed at how many people consider their OH their best Friend. I love my OH, some of you may or may not know about things that he has done last few months and i can not imagine not having my friend Di there to speak to. She keeps me sound
I can talk to OH but theres some things that needs a womans opinion! lol
Other than family and casual friends i think i've only one close mate that i've had for about 35yrs, another went to live abroad about 18mths ago after meeting a girl on holiday. Everybody thought he'd have been back home by now.
lol maybe your friend has other friends abroad nowMaybe we all secretly know each other through other people . . .

I have lots of 'mates' and fair weather friends, but they are not friends in the true sense of the word. If you have eight very close friends now, chances are that within a few years some will not be so close (for various reasons), and so you are down to ... five!
It is an age/ life experience thing. I don't think we ever stop learning about people, and the times we learn most are when a crisis actually happens. It is surprising how many people we have full confidence will be there when things get bad, that will then let you down. Conversely, others will surprise and then come through for you. It is only then that you realise who your true friends are.
I do agree with you that as we get older we lose some friends, things change and sometimes people turn out not to be who you thought they were, or things you liked about their character start to grate etc.. but we make new friends as we get older too. Just because we haven't known someone very long doesn't mean they can't be a good friend, the same as just because you have known someone forever doesn't mean they are necessarily a great friend, just that you have history.
I have (thankfully) had little cause to rely on my friends for serious things as I have my DH who is very supportive and my mum who I'm very close to, but in little ways my friends help me every day. I have helped some of them through very hard times, and if I felt they were asking too much I would say, 'no' Im sorry I can't manage that, as I am very aware that I don't want resentment to build, our friendship is precious to me, and I don't want to feel resentful of someone I love. I am a very honest person and thats why my friends are my friends.
I'll come back to you in 5 years and let you know if I still feel the same! Lol!0
