Well I'm totally with the OP on this, and luckily folks passing cars parked on their side of the road will be held to blame if there is a collision.
There's a massive discrepancy in this post. IE, between the situation where there can be 3 cars abreast, and the situation where there can't, and only the driver with the right of way can give way and save the day and avoid a collision.
This is where the Jeckyl and Hyde complex kicks in, (I have one), Some will always give way and some won't. Me? I will do once or twice, but it a bit nausiating after a while, then I drive right down the centre of my side of the road and stop the traffic, they have the choice of hitting me if they want, and it won't just be a wing mirror, but I will not drive off the road for anyone at normal school run speeds.
No it's not highway code stuff and it's not advisable but just how can the message be got accross.

Oh and just to add it's very often a 4x4 mum with a dirty great "child on board" placade int the window:rolleyes:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Who will be leaving several foot between their nearside and the parked cars (because they don't know how wide their car is), but then expect you to drive in the gutter.cyclonebri1 wrote: »then I drive right down the centre of my side of the road and stop the traffic, they have the choice of hitting me if they want, and it won't just be a wing mirror
Been there, got the T shirt.0 -
My thoughts?
If there's enough room then move over and get on with it.
Don't moan about it being "your" bit of road.Happy chappy0 -

If there is only space for one vehicle to pass then i would take up a mid position so that the oncoming driver could clearly see that they would have to wait and give way. If they persist then obviously we would be bumper to bumper and they would have to then reverse. Their choice. My car is nearly 20 years old and my work vehicle is bigger than their car. Some people need to go study the highway code again. Having said that,if it was clear there was room for two to pass,i would make allowances should they choose to take that option.0

The thing that really [STRIKE]pis[/STRIKE] annoys me is when two lanes merge into one and instead of 'zipping' in like most people do, some people think that because they are in the lane that carrys on they have to sit glued to the car in front of them. It is especially annoying when the road has big signs saying 'use both lanes'.
Although when I had a really old battered Swift I used to love crawling next to these poeple pointing out how lovely their car was compared to mine that was covered in bumps and scratches
Caused by the previous owner, I hasten to add. 0 -
We're a bit off topic terryya, but that zipping system (one from left lane, one from right lane, into the single lane in front) is actually part of the German highway code. Instead if all the people on the inside lane screaming at all the 'fast drivers' whizzing past them on the outside and 'cutting in', both lanes are queued in evenly, no-one has to stop due to hesitant or pushy driving, and the traffic just keeps flowing. It ain't like that here!
The driving round a parked car thing has been well covered. The white line (if there is one) is the boundary that you mustn't cross if there's a parked car in your way, so if you can't get past, you shouldn't go. But there's give and take and if the person coming the other way can see that there is enough space for both of you, they should let you know by placing their car appropritatey (as in, move in). Conversely, to prevent the OP's problems, if they think there isn't enough room, they should make this clear, but sticking to the middle of the road. This prevents misunderstandings happening 'in the middle'!
If you're behind the parked car and you think that there is enough space but the other person doesn't, it's a bit cheeky, but why not move your car out beside the parked one and stop, and let the other driver drive up and 'squeeze' through the bus sized gap they thought wasn't big enuough, and make sure to 'give them evils'!0 -
If there isn't enough room then the car on the side of the road with the parked cars should wait. If there is enough room then allowances should be made and both cars should pass. If I've got right of way and there isn't enough room for 2 cars but the other car insists on coming anyway, I refuse to literally drive up the pavement for them. I think close to the pavement is reasonable though and Im confident enough in my driving that I won't hit it. Similarly, I've been the car on the give way side and seen the approaching car with literally 5 foot between them and the kerb. In this case I'd just carry on driving until they moved over.0

You must be one of the people I've hit then. I don't move over, or stop. But to be fair if I was five feet over I'd probaby hit the parked cars on the right as well.0
