And when 3 says she should be stripping tonight I take it she means wallpaper, or at least I hope so!!!

Wallpaper i'm afraid! If it was any other type of stripping, you'd hear OH screaming as he ran down the road - away! :o

Feelie I'm also happy to read? but like MFD won't be offended if you don't want me to

Me to if you think I can be of any use! ;)
Writing it all down in a start though Feelie - has it helped at all? (Have you let OH read it?)

Tigs have you considered bottle feeding EBM? it has worked for Elle/Rhys and Feelie/Tobes.
We had blips in feeding here and Ed is/was fullterm so all is not lost, he could be feeling better in a day or two and get going again xx

Thanks for all your lovely responses.

It's hard to eat well at the hospital without spending a fortune, so I'm taking a packed lunch with me each day, and they've let me use the Parents Kitchen (meant for people rooming-in) so that I have somewhere to make a brew.

I just don't seem to have time for anything else at the moment, when I'm not at the hospital I'm flaked out on the sofa, desperately trying to stay awake until 11pm to express; then I'm up at 3am for the overnight pump, and up at 7am again to start the next day's routine.

MM, I've seen the unit's BF Advisor three times now. She keeps telling me that Andrew is both premature and immature , and that he'll get there eventually - but how long is a piece of string? Apparently I'm doing this extremely well, good positioning etc, just Andrew doesn't want to open his mouth and when he does, he doesn't latch. I find it terribly demoralising to try and try until he gets ratty, and then have to see him tube-fed again :(

eta. The BF Advisor reckons it could take Andrew just as long to establish bottle-feeding, so there'd be no time gain in switching him off the breast at this point.

They do really push direct BFing in hospitals, and bottle feeding is often seen as second best and "not desireable". I think it's because they think of it as bottle feeding EBM is a smaller step away from bottle feeding formula and they don't want to make formula feeding look any more attractive (cos they're not allowed to promote it etc).

Tigs, if you want to give it a try, by all means sound them out about it, but if you want him to have breastmilk it is one hell of a long hard slog to keep up the expressing at home too :( I'm sorry, I'm really not trying to discourage you at all, just telling it how I've found it.

It's very hard to put down a crying baby who you've longed to hold on to for so long so that you can rig yourself up to a stupid machine yet again.. :o

Tell me to keep my gob shut if you like xx

Rhys never took to cup feeding at all, nor breastfeeding while we were in hospital. They suggested bottle feeding (and abandoning breastfeeding) as it was better than the tube, long-term, plus it would only give him one thing to think about (rather than breast while I was there and cup when I wasn't) as the nurses could do bottles as well as me during the night.

oh yes I ment to say I dressed my big sis as a haunted house once :D She wore a big cardboard box that we covered in paper and drew/stuck on varous bits n bobs for windows, ghosts etc and a piece of card folded in to on her head for the roof. everyone found it throughly hilarious at the time

    That is excellent :)

Feelie, Just to let you know I've not volunteered for reading, as I know I won't have time to look at anything until Thursday night after today, and you probably need someone to look at it sooner that that ... Sounds like you have lots of willing volunteers though. I hope it helps you get what you need.

  • Tigs, Eloise is 8 months next week and i still have days when she won't open her mouth and latch and we dont seem to be able to get it together on the BF front (sorry thats probably not that helpful)

I know how demoralising it can be but he will get there I'm sure. Chin up!

And you probably wouldn't have time for anything else if he was at home either.
