Is the silence a good or bad thing?

Depends if they got BB sorted at the new house in time? Or if the removal guys took the PC ;)
  • I had a proper removal survey done (in fact I had seven done (every company recommended to me) - i did ask for guidance here on how to choose which one to book, insofar as I had any choice but not exactly helpful responses then) I also stressed that we had a lot of stuff eg said things like "This cupboard goes back a long way" - and told the tale of my parents move and how I didn't want that to happen to us.

Well it did. Your confidence was misplaced. I'll not go into the resulting complications here for legal reasons, but even with me phoning the extra van was *very* touch and go and they didn't send the extra crew promised and the actual loading took up to the wire. Given that they didn't take out appliances until the very end, you can imagine how much cleaning there was to do. Because of the long delay we didn't have the help for moving day that we'd anticipated (my parents had to be in the new area to look after the children) and setting up home is going to take longer because we couldn't supervise the packing as we were too busy cleaning.

However, we have left it in a respectable state, it was just a very unpleasant experience. The new place has not been fully cleared and the tip is a long way!

On the plus side, apart from saying "The estimator should be shot" (we essentially needed twice the van space - and when the first van came I assumed it was one of two - I obviously had a better idea!) the crew did their best in the circumstances and remained good humoured and didn't throw things around in a temper.

Maybe if some of you hadn't said "Calm down, they are the experts" I would have had the confidence to phone the company again and demanded they send a bigger second van and the promised extra crew... that'll teach me!

To be honest, if that was a really stressful day, you have led a pretty sheltered life up to now.
  • Stress affects different people in different way. A few weeks ago I had approx 3 weeks work to get done in 4 days, didn't phase me a bit. I just stayed in work every day til they kicked me out and worked my *** off. Got it done, wasn't worried in the slightest.

On Wednesday I had to teach a class how to use some software I know like the back of my hand, THAT was stressful! Although very easy too, and looking back it won't be as bad next time.

Ah, great... nice of you to pop back and blame us (and everybody else)

    Gotta love the blame culture.

They are professionals, they've seen more houses full of stuff to be moved than you've had hot dinners.

They will have been able to expertly guesstimate the amount of time/men/effort required ... whereas to you it's all just overwhelming.

    Chill out, it'll be fine.

You would hope so , but there are a lot of man with van removal companies out there who dont have a clue
Vuja De - the feeling you'll be here later
  • If you want a stressful moving experience, how's this one....

    - House purchase completed Mid May.
    - Builders start beginning of June to out in new bathrooms & kitchen. Should take 6 weeks
    - Brother's house is advertised for rental.
    - Tenants due to move in 1st August.
    - Builders due to finish 25th July.
    - Me & parents move from A to B on Thursday 30th July.
    - Brother & family move C to A on 31st July.

All with a dog, fish, three year old, and a man in a wheelchair. Oh, and the builders hadn't actually finished and I couldn't do any lifting. In addition, the house we were moving into hadn't been cleaned by the previous owner.

To be fair I think people were trying to keep you calm. I had a similar experience many years ago with a two bed flat and a well known removal firm - despite a 'survey' they didn't have enough space in the van, enough time and some idiot booked a second job in the middle of the day so we were still unloading furniture at 8pm when we'd paid for a full unpack. I didn't post and say that as I didn't want to stress you unnecessarily.
