Fuel prices on Spain are actually lower. Filling up on motorways is still less than the price you quoted. Returned from Spain on Wednesday so can speak from very recent experience.
Given the choice I would rather return the car with a full tank at the end of the hire (which used to be the way car hire companies worked in Spain). However for the last few years I have been unable to find a company which actually does this. Which was the OP's point. If anyone does know of a hire car company working out of Reus or Valencia who does not charge for the initial tank of fuel I'd love to know.
Checked the Sixt website. As they use Solmar at Reus, the pay for a full tank on collection applies.0 -
Try Europcar rentals. As I know, they provide full/full fuel policy.0

Yes they do provide a full / full hire BUT their car hire is about double everbody else !!!!!!!!!
And what makes you think that you deserve a full/full policy for the same price as the cheaper ones with fuel purchase policies?
If you don't like the price - don't buy it!From Poland...with love.
They are (they're) sitting on the floor.
Their books are lying on the floor.
The books are sitting just there on the floor.0 -
Just going back to the OP - last time I hired a car in Spain I found that virtually all companies will do Full/Full car hire if you're there for under 3 or 4 days. Has that now changed, or were you unlucky enough to book with one that doesn't do this? Check your rental contract - if the company should have offered Full/Full, I suggest you contact their customer services department.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
Just back from Tenerife South. Fell for the same "should of read tiny print" scam. GOLDCAR again..through AUTO EUROPE. Avoid like the plague. Charged 60 euro for a Clio,so given it's a 11 gallon tank you do the maths.Your shafted twice with this scam by being charged £5 a gallon for petrol that you're never going to use unless you cover 600 km.Absolutely disgusting.
After looking again AUTO RIESEN do a pay-what-u-use policy.Big up to them for not clagging to this low-life scam.
5 euros a gallon is absolutely correct (1.09 per litre) it is you that needs to do your maths . .
11 gallons = 50 litres and at approx 1.10 Euros per litre (but it was almost 1.30 6 months ago) = 55 Euros, so you had to pay 60 Euros. Someone has to go and fill the car up. If you tell Goldcar you want to return it full then in most cases they will let you do it. By the way, Goldcar are one of the better companies in spain . . .0 -

Hi
I have been hit several times with high fuel charges when travelling to Spain, and yes, I know I signed up and agreed to this but I couldn't find any other options. Last year I used Hertz and was given a car with a full tank and had to return the car with a full tank - That worked well as I only paid for what I used, and I paid pump price, not the hire company price.
This year I have struggled to find the same deal with hertz but have found a better deal with Suncar car hire, with this company you collect the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank, you do not have to pay inflated prices for fuel.
One thing to note, I was charged £15.31 for collecting the car at 2.30pm on a Saturday afternoon as the hire company close early on a Saturday so watch for this. Look at the opening times and try and work collection and drop-off around this.
I've paid £101.00 for 7 days hire, ford fiesta with air con and 1 additional driver, cross border insurance included. The out of hours charge took the total to £116.31, but I'm happy that I can buy my own fuel and pay pump price as the locals do..
I can't leave a link as I haven't posted enough, but the company is:
