BT Broadband extended contract without my permission

Options
I moved up from England to Scotland the very beginning of May. I moved my BT account and broadband up with me. There was some confusion over the Broadband account and I had to ring up a good few times to get it moved. One guy I spoke to said "Oh you're almost finished your Broadband account so coz you're in the last month you have to extend it to another 3 months contract" I agreed to this as 3 months was no problem and I intended to join O2 Broadband anyway when I changed mobile contracts later that year.

Now its September and I hadn't had a call from BT re my Broadband account so I was puzzled and gave them a ring. The person on the helpline told me I was locked into my BT Broadband account til April 2010! I had NOT agreed to this at all and was very raging. The guy has said he's sent a letter/memo/email/whatever to some place to ask to listen back to phone records etc and that I hadn't been informed that I would need to accept another years contract when moving.

I am SO annoyed over this. I had really NOT agreed to it and I can still hear the guys voice in my head saying "three months" not "one year" or "12 months" so i'm mega !!!!ed off as i'd never have agreed to another years contract when I could have just opened up a brand new contract when I moved up here with a completely different supplier. Do I have a leg to stand on? Basically it's my word against there and i'm utterly positive I am right. I'm just worried as I had 4-5 phone calls in a short space of time re my Broadband account when I was wanting to move so I dont know if they'll have a record of it or whatever. Sigh

Actually I just had a similar issue. Rang BT to move my line and BB to a new home and was surprised to hear that my BB contract is 18 months whereas I clearly remember I opted for 12 months. I could not argue because I need to go home and check all bills but I felt sooooo p...ed. BT company representative, are you still here and able to help please?

This is weird because BT have done the same to me, I joined BT broadband anywhere last year in May, I was expecting my contract to finish in December and was told that although my broadband term had ended (which I have requested a MAC for my broadband anywhere) was running until June next year!

pretty sure that i didn't sign up to a 2 year minimum contract for this but everyone I have spoken to have just quoted dates and not actually explained why these dates are being quoted, even when I tell them I signed up May last year.

I'm not very happy to say the least

  • Hi,
I moved from my home in Wales in June 2008 having had BT broadband for 18 months (I think). Anyway, my contract came to an end about the time I moved.
Once I had moved to London I rang BT to cancel my broadband as I was out of contract only to be told that I had entered into another 1 year agreement!
Obviously I was not aware of this, I had SEVERAL phone conversations with people at BT and eventually someone agreed that I had not been informed of the extension, I had not requested it and not agreed to it (would be dumb if I did as I was moving!).
Anyway, over a year later I am now recieveing letters from a debt collection agency threatening home visits over the £450 I owe them on be behalf of BT!
I have called BT who informed me that I owed the money as I was sent a letter saying the contract would automatically renew if I did not inform them otherwise, this is disgraceful. a) I never recieved that letter, b) I would NEVER have agreed a further year as the service was poor, the price was high and c) I was moving and had no reason to extend!
BT are being really unhelpful now and saying the matter must be dealt with by the collection agency, they are being unhelpful and saying BT should deal with it. Not sure what to do, am thinking Ofcom and FSA?
    Any advice?
Are companies actually allowed to extend an agreement by a year without consent of the client? A letter? I never recieved it, what if it was never sent?
    GGGRRRR.....

  • I have just got off the phone with BT who told me contrary to all of their advertising, my slow internet speed is due to the internet being busy and too many people being on the same line. I was then told that my contract was extended to 24 months in October last year (i joined up in may last year) and that I'll now have to pay out the remainder of the contract if i want to cancel it!

I am not sure who would call any company and extend a lock in period by choice but this seems to be what BT are suggesting I have done...

I have to say i am very unimpressed with BT!
