  • I remember seeing a free trial for ancestry advertised recently but I can't remember where. Does anyone still have the details, and also does anyone have any experience of using free trials with them and cancelling. I don't have any intention of continuing beyond the free trial period and I wondered what other peoples experiences were.

    thx

    Hi

I used a free trail with them, it's usually on their website. You do have to register your credit card and if you don't cancel in time you will get charged £83 I think it is for this years subscription. So if it's for 14 days cancel on day 10 to be sure - you ring up and they ask you why you want to cancel.

I made sure that I had a lot of time to sit and do it over the 10 days and saved all good searches to my computer. I did end up subscribing a year later but really I am not much further on than I was then.

Family Tree Maker (World edition, ie includes 6 months "world" subscription to Ancestry.co.uk) is half price if you go directly to the publishers & put in the code FTMWORLD50.
    http://www.avanquest.com/UK/education/family-tree/

If you buy via TopCashBack then you'll get 30% cashback as well! So £99.99 down to £49.99 then about £15 cashback so approx £35 :money:(It's about £60 on Amazon currently)
It's a good deal, as to buy a subscription (without the software) directly from Ancestry costs a LOT more. Just checked and it's £155.40 for 12 months World or £107.40 for 12 months Premium.
You could use the free 14 day trial to see if it's what you need.
[STRIKE]If all your family were UK based then it's probably no good for you. Better for those with Irish, US, Aussie backgrounds etc.[/STRIKE] - see clarification in next post.

I've just read back what I'd written before & thought I should clarify that the subscription to the World database (ie the above offer) includes all their records so is good for those researching UK, Irish AND world records.

There's not much in it for the Essentials package but there are definate savings to be had if you would normally buy the Premium or World subscriptions (as long as the cashback tracks).

In other words, as far as I can make out, it's worthwhile getting the World Edition of FTM no matter what part of the world you are researching because the subscription that's included works out cheaper than buying directly from Ancestry. Sorry if I've caused any confusion!

    did it track ok?
  • It's obviously not guaranteed but it tracked within a few days and took another few days to go to confirmed. Just waiting for it to pay out now. I took screenshots just in case it didn't track though.

How does it work if you are already a member of Ancestry - can you add the free worldwide package to your current subscription? What do Ancestry charge for the remaining 6 months as they only do Annual or monthly subscriptions.

I had an Ancestry worldwide annual membership a couple of years ago that was due to run out in the March, then someone bought me the Family Tree Maker for the Christmas before the March and Ancestry just added the free months onto my membership so it ran out in June (it used to be 3 free months). Hope that helps.
