Hi Tricia
if you go to http://landing.ancestry.co.uk/victorianbritain/?o_xid=24660&o_lid=24660&o_xt=2028455&offerid=0%3a7935%3a0 they offer you a free 14 day trial.
Dont pay any websites that offer you complete birth marriage and death indexes as Ancestry offer this free of charge

I signed up a free trial with Ancestry, you just send them an email to cancel and they usually do it within a few hours. However I am so impressed with the census returns (all decades on there now and fully searchable by name) that I pay the £70 yearly fee

Credit card required. I just got done doing 6 days of Ancestry because they had a 3-day free trial, no credit card required. I've heard of people who had problems canceling with this service, so just be prepared to be diligent and cancel if you take it up.0

I don't know whether you are still interested but you can use Ancestry.co.uk at your local library for free.0

It's not 100% the full version (it's the Ancestry Library Edition, which has some smaller pieces missing for some reason), and also most libraries only give you 30-60 minutes of computer time. You can spend hours at a time doing genealogy work.
It's still a good option for those who can't afford it, but it's not a full substitute.0 -
