either the driver of the car has to be in receipt of higher rate mobility DLA or he can nominate another vehicle if he/she doesnt drive but it has to be used almost exclusively for the benefit of the disabled person(as would a motabilty nominated vehicle).0 -
All above is correct you need a form see below plus higher rate DLA or nominated driver
To tax in the disabled tax class you’ll need exemption certificate DLA404

Thanks all, it's not for me; just a general enquiry.
I've just noticed my neighbour has one, he is 75 and does have some disabilities, but he is always telling us how poor he is and if he has to get a high rate disability benefit to get the exemption, then he actually has this, his State Pension and his Teachers' Pension, so I don't think he's quite as badly off as he always says he is!
Thanks once again!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

or War Pensioners Mobility Supplement.
High Rate DLA Mobility component isn't the only benefit to give access to the disabled (free) tax disc.

How well off you are is a very subjective opinion. I feel very poor on benefits but then 5 years ago I had an income of over £50K and holidayed in the Maldives. Margate just doesn't compare LOL
The benefits system is incredibly complicated, he may not even be getting one of the benefits currently available as some remain in payment even if they're not available to new claimants. If he's 75 then it might not be high rate mobility as (by current rules) he would have needed to be claiming it before he turned 65(?) And if he is getting DLA it might all be used for a motability car and therefore not be available as cash.

DLA isn't means tested so he can be very wealthy and still qualify0 -

He had his disabilities before he was 65. It is not a motability car, it is seven years old.
As we have (at present and for the last five years) an income of less than £10k, then he is better off than us even with just his two pensions. I don't care, or begrudge him that, I just wish he would stop pleading poverty as it gets somewhat wearing, especially as he always seems to think we are rolling in it.
I was not spying on him, he was showing us his new car and I just happened to notice it said 'disabled' on the tax disc. So thought I'd ask here!
And I've 'got a life' thanks, just enjoying settling into my home country and family home again after five years living in Spain learning a new language and culture.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Just noted seven day weekends posting...
If you get a motability car,do they give you a weekly fuel allowance also?
I'm just thinking with the price of fuel,it would still be costly to run a car?
SDWs posting reminded me of someone i met recently.
Man and woman, both around mid 40s,both on "benefits",lived in a nice semi detached house, brand new motability car and caravan on drive, both appeared to be fully mobile and fit. Man said he had a particular condition which is very common and many people in the UK get by quite happily with it and work/keep a family as normal. In fact, going by his condition,i too should be on DLA!
It seems that you can get higher rate DLA for seemingly everyday conditions which many people just manage ?0 -
The only thing you have to put in a motability car is petrol or diesel. Everything else is covered.
You shouldn't be getting higher rate mobility if yiu don't need it. Sometimes things are not as straightforward as you think. I have MS. Somedays, I can walk a fair bit, other days, I can just about crawl out of bed. This is the same with many other conditions, like ME and fibromyalgia. Ple don't judge when you don't know the reasons!I Believe in saving money!!!:T
