  • Good luck with the new car hunting. I'll be interested to hear what you finally plunge for and if it runs good on veg. Happy new year!

Happy new year to you too(although somewhat belated).
Searched high and low, looked at everything from mercs and Vauxhall Montereys to rover 75's, corsas, mondeos and fiestas. Have finally bought.... a 1997 Astra lol.

Google for Bosch VE pump - images. You'll find tons of them.

Car insurance renewal comes thru this morning and it has gone up £80, now I expected this as its in the news that all policies are going up but I still hit the price comparison websites just to make sure I am getting the best deal and lo and behold the same company can do me for £89 cheaper as a new customer! A quick phone call is made and the same new price is offered no hassle and a bit of fiddling with the details has saved me another £10, whilst typing this my phone has rang and its the same insurance guy letting me know he has made a small mistake and it will be another £11 cheaper! This is now the same price as last year, this could be a good omen.....except it couldn't;t start this morning so the battery is currently on charge and I am trying to work out how to take off the washer reservoir pump and replace it as it has stopped working and it isn't the fuse.

Washer pump now replaced- an easy job and only £18 lighter, probably the firsdt time in years I've done some car diy without breaking something and causing an even bigger job (bill). MOT tomorrow morning so I am off for an Italian tune up on the way home tonight although I don't expect it to pass as there is a slight knock from the passenger front which I suspect is a rubber bush that needs replacing. Fingers crossed that it won't benothing too serious/expensive, MOT runs out 18/02 so have plenty of time to get any repairs arranged.
  • Thats me done 150 miles, all going great. Suspect the battery was a little dodgy, swapped it with the one in the Corsa which is probably just about a year old.
I've bought all the stuff to do the timing belt (belt, pulley, tensioner, I had a waterpump in the garage) and had an estimate of £150 labour only.
Dont know whether to tackle it myself or not, I've just done the belts on my bike and had it serviced which was pricy as well. It would still cost similar to buy the right tools for the job, but then I'd have them.
Tested the 3 glowplugs you can get to easily, I'd imagine the other ones never been changed but it starts a lot better with the battery change.
I've also now got a source for oil that is still liquid in this temperature so i'm thinking of filtering some instead of processing it to save even more.
Also ordered my second drum of methanol, so thats 1000 litres of bio under the belt.
