Running my Vauxhall Astra on veg oil

All done ! and working like a dream. The RAC repair didn't have the adjuster on it and I was advise to get a proper one fitted asap and that was a month ago when it broke so I suppose I had to get it done sometime, I am just relived that it is not a gearbox fault as I first thought.
To celebrate I've just treated her to 10 litres of dino and 40 litres of wvo- my biggest mix so far so I hope the weather stays warm. At the bottom of the cubies I had some cloudy residue so I shall filter the bottom 2/3 litres again in each cubie. Now have to go on the hunt for some more wvo, I suspect someone else at work is helping themselves from the staff restaurant as there doesn't seem to be a lot around at the moment unless they've just had it collected before I looked.0 -

We're running a 1993 Merc on veg oil since we got the car last October. She's just on straight veg oil from the supermarkets at the moment, though over winter she had up to half and half with diesel when it was cold. Seems to be working a treat, though we do get some funny looks in the supermarket with the trolley full of oil. We're thinking about getting a 500-1000 litre tank in the garden with a bulk order of veg oil, then some kind of pump attached, has anyone done something similar?
We saw you can get some chemicals to make the oil runnier down to minus 17C I think - has anyone got any experience of using those? It would be great if we could keep the car running on SVO all winter...Live on £11k in 20110 -
www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk seems a good place. I'm sure they do a kit for around £180.0

Thanks, rev_henry. It's a saloon rather than a traveller, but yes, it is an ex Devon and Cornwall police car which I had for 7 years until very recently. I've actually just rehomed that car to my Dad, to raise the money to do up another one - an ex Metropolitan Morris Minor panda car. The last one was done professionally, but we're going to try doing the new one ourselves. I've just learned how to weld!Live on £11k in 20110

I haven't tried any veg through the winter months but may give it a go this year.0 -
Has anyone worked out MPG so far on veg? I'll be doing a 430 mile round trip on Thursday. Plan is to put as much veg oil in as I dare and top it up at the petrol station. Do the trip then fill up again, finishing the last 5-10 litres at the petrol station again.
I got my hands on 50 litres of "contaminated" diesel with perhaps another 30 litres to come. (some lumps in it) Filtered to 1 micron and will be pre-mixing oil with diesel to put straight in.
Used first of the settling tank yesterday. It's upstairs in my garage so just opened the tap and using a hose, put it straight into the filters. Straining/adding the diesel at the same time makes it go through the filters quicker too.0 -
I get 40mpg in my Astra on good trip. I will be doing a "veggie" road trip in August on the motor way and will take a more scientific approach then. I don't think in mpg anymore, just free miles to the gallon. 80/20 mix is going very well with no real problems, a bit laboured for the first 30 seconds but fine after that , and when up to temp drives just like 100% dino. I've got some new filters on the way and will pick some wvo up a next week.0
