(I searched for 'avg' and got nothing and so...)
Currently I pay for ZoneAlarm anti-virus and firewall. The subscription is coming to an end. I know AVG is a free anti-virus tool. Is it reliable? What do you use as the firewall to go with it? Does it take up a lot of memory?
TIA.

Hi
AVG is excellent, updates everyday, I've never had a virus and I've been using it for a couple of years now.
I use Sygate for my firewall, again never had a problem with it, and if you go to Shields Up, and run all the port scans, it always shows my comp in stealth mode, which is the best result you can get.0 -

greenwich,
AVG free edition is excellent. I've used it for a number of years and had no problems. You'll find its one of the most recommended antivirus programs on this board if you look around although its difficult to search for it as the search needs at least three lower case letters. The website is www.grisoft.com0 -
I use AVG and find it brilliant :TI’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Quick Grabbit, Freebies, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning and the UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.

It can be a little difficult finding the free edition if you go to the main Grisoft site.
Go direct to
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
and download it from the Orange box near the bottom - not the Trial Version link.0 -
Thanks, everyone. I've installed the free (not the trial) version of AVG tonight, and ZoneAlarm's free firewall. I turned off ZoneAlarm's own email protection, as I think AVG recommend that.
All seems fine. I have one further question.
When I get emails from a friend they say something like this at the bottom:
No virus found in this outgoing message.
Checked by AVG Free Edition.
Version: 7.1.392 / Virus Database: 268.5.6/337 - Release Date: 5/11/2006
But I've sent a test email to myself and it arrived without that message. I am wondering if the virus checking is really enabled for my emails. The AVG test center says it is.Eh?? I give up!! Towel is getting thrown in here!

In the control centre, Email Scanner. Properties,Configure just tick scan outgoing mail, then again I never do that as it will hold up a server response when sending large email.0 -
Personally prefer Avast to AVG but they are similar, Avast is just more stable on my laptop than AVG was for some reason. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

There was a review in COmputer Shopper or PC Plus last month that compared many of the different virus detectors and AVG came out quite well. It is a bit basic and can be resource hungry but it generally does the job.
The thing is that we have been pretty much wound up with paranoia believing we have to have all these things installed on our PCs. While anybody doing serious random surfing should have them it is only to handle a possible risk. If you look at the logs the vast majority of the time they tell you that they have detected nothing and intercepted nothing.
I recently had to fix a laptop that was so slow because it was grinding away with anti-virus, spyware, hijack detection etc. software .... the thing didn't even have a modem and the owner assured me that it was never connected to the web so I simply took it all of .. problem fixed.
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0
