Dont know why people are so down on Acer laptops, I've only ever bought them with the exception of an amilo, which was crap. Acers are good cheap laptops and when they've gone wrong I've had no trouble getting them fixed. Oh and THIS is very good value too and cheaper (when back in stock!) than dell as usual.

As a side note THIS is worth a look all you need is a ubuntu cd.

Even this one at £304 comes in a good £100 less than the Dell and even has a better processor. Specifications.

No, it's not worth a look. You suggestion of Ubuntu is just irresponsible.

Can't imagine the amount of hassle her daughter would have in trying to install the necessary software for her studies, let alone having to install an OS that may not even install without adjustment to the BIOS.

So she'll need to buy a Vista disc to bring it up to spec. That will be another £65.

Plus it's from a not well known Taiwanese company and has a Celeron processor.

To what purpose this, when you can purchase a similar branded laptop fully set up?
  • Ive had bad experiences with Acer so i would pick a dell machine any day.

Acer laptops are heavy and break easier and when it comes to warranty dont even go there. They might lose your laptop like they lost mine and it took 3 months to sort out. They eventually sent me a brand new one but i did lose all my work files on there.

I have a 5 yr old Acer, its now hot , A drive is missing from My Computer never know why it comes and goes, mostly gone, The DVD wont read a thing now. Acer Techs said its a design fault the heat travels past the DVD and screws them up.
I now have a spanking new Dell , if you can wait a few weeks till Windows 7 comes out then might be worth waiting, You will get a free disc with it on if you buy a Vista machine now but you have the hassel of installing it yourself, and making sure what few weeks of work you have put on is backed up first.

Also the Student Union will have all the details of what software, free burgers and cheap drinks vouchers will be around, as well as the FAF week info.

"The price of the Dell in post #17 has changed since I posted yesterday. The web cam is no longer included and the base package is £20 more than it was yesterday. So to bring it up to spec will now cost £403. Then you'll have to add Office costs to that.... not worth it in my opinion."

Snicky b***rds!! They promise "savings" until tomorrow!
I was looking at the same pack and did not see the differences.... a friend tells me refurbished are usually old so I was going to go for that one, but you are telling me it's lost components!!
  • I would suggest Dell for performance and Acer for price.

Will try to "chat" to someone in Dell see if I can still get the other package....

Spoken like an idiot that doesn't know what they're speaking about. Cant imagine anything more difficult than going into the repositories and getting everything you need right there and installing it for free! Not to mention things like openoffice are installed as standard. Anyway whats irresponisble about a free OS and cheap well specc'd laptop thats brand new and not from fleabay? I'd take a celeron dual core over a pentium dual core any day, and a new laptop over a refurb especially one from fleabay (asking for trouble)!

    Dear asininity

I know that you wish to defend your patently ridiculous suggestion, but a University student will not want to spend time working out how to install software that is necessary for coursework whilst using UBUNTU.
Especially when the software differs from what everyone else is using. Please don't bother to mention WINE.... :)
    cheap well specc'd laptop
    ????

    Is that a joke?

Intel Celeron Dual Core T3000 1.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB SATA HDD, DVDRW, 15.4" screen, WebCam, NO Operating System

    compared with...

    Intel® Centrino® processor technology featuring Intel® Core 2 Duo Processor T5800, Intel® GM45 Express chipset and Intel® WiFi Link 5100
    clock speed : 2.00 GHz
front side bus : 800 MHz
    2nd level cache : 2 MB

Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium 32-bit Edition

    Draft-N Wireless

56 Kbps data and 14.4 Kbps fax modem

    Face Recognition software etc

Where do you even see the mention of Pentium??

The laptops are at the same price point of £300, but the Toshiba is far superior and ready to roll.

Take note that every time that I have posted a link to a laptop that I recommend, it sells out within a day.

Have you seen any of those buyers complaining about old 'refurbs'?

No, you won't...because they are this years' models and probably returns within the Argos 16 day guarantee.

I know, because I've put my money where my mouth is. They look brand new.

So, it appears that you don't know about what you are writing/talking. :)
